W.B.'s Bus Almanac for January 21st

Posted by W.B. on Wed Jan 21 02:58:17 2026

January 21-22, 1961 - The Book of Route Operational Changes

Brooklyn and Queens, New York
New York City Transit Authority - Queens Bus Division
Triboro Coach Corporation

On January 21, the TA's Route B-72 - Junction Boulevard is officially sold to Triboro Coach. At midnight on January 22, the route designation is hereby changed to Q-72 and extended south to Queens Boulevard, and free transfers to and from the B-58 - Flushing-Ridgewood line are eliminated. It would be the only time a private company would take over a city bus route. It would be placed back in city operation after 2006 when Triboro Coach is taken over by the MTA and placed under MTA Bus aegis.

This was the only successful takeover despite other attempts being made throughout the 1950s and in 1995 when NYCT wanted to eliminate all non Staten Island express buses.
