Rear bus route number display

Posted by gbs on Thu Oct 30 22:33:21 2025

On some of the new classes of buses, the rear bus display alternates between the route number and "NYCT". This has been seen on the Q17 and Q27, which come from different depots.

Sometimes the display change rate is so slow that the route doesn't show for almost 10 seconds.

Whose idea was it to display NYCT on the rear? Riders only care about the route number, not the agency running the buses. How about just showing the route number, and, if appropriate, Limited, Rush, and SBS, but surely not NYCT.

(And some Rush routes display Rush on the rear while others do not.)

I notice it started with the silly "Fare Required" add-ons. I'm pretty sure the two items are linked.

(Aside: The "Fare Required" add-on is yet another thing that punishes fare-paying customers by reducing the percentage of time they have to view the bus's route/destination).

I also agree that even since delivery a lot of the New Flyers starting in the 2010s had destination signs that cycled too slowly.

I've been annoyed by "Have a Nice Day" and "Go [name of sports team]" destination displays for decades.

I have little doubt that NYCT is displayed as the rear display for the "Fare Required" page, with the route number displayed when the route is displayed on the front sign.

The "Fare Required" was useful when they started collecting fares again after COVID, but why are they still showing it? No one who wants to evade the fare is going to care about the digital sign.

What's even more ludicrous is when these buses are "NOT IN SERVICE," yet still show the "FARE REQUIRED" in rotation.

While we're on the subject, I dislike when a message scrolls across just because it was a character or two too long to fully fit on the screen, or worse when it scrolls across for no reason (it could have just displayed statically) and you need to wait for the scrolling to finish to get to the next frame.

The R211s are driving me crazy with their interior screens. So many station titles--even short ones--take two frames to display.
