I know the Bx56 did start (or pass by) Grand Concourse and 161st St by the Courthouse. I know it's not helpful but maybe someone can remember and contribute.

I wonder if FTA regulations regarding charters would prevent the TA from running such loops. I would think that another factor would be the numerous tour companies already doing business in Midtown.

The other thing about that flyer that caught my attention was the "Shoppers Bus Ticket" for Midtown Manhattan.

If the MTA ever gets its act together (a very big leap of faith) would they ever consider such a similar promotion for the Christmas holiday season and are there other areas of the city where it might work (ie. Downtown Brooklyn).

I agree. I wonder if these loops would work today. The only problem is with all the weekend detours, the NYC marathon, parades, streetfairs it would through the schedule and routing off so bad that probably all the buses on the line will end up running with each other.
I remember as a kid seeing the B88 downtown where I grew up in the Lower East Side.

Thank you for taking the time to dig out post these old pictures. I seem to think that there is also a pictture of a New Look with Bat-Wings but my old friend Al Zeimers may be playing tricks on me.

Amazing to see how many fallen flags are pictured here.

1- Chemical Bank on Broadway - now JP Morgan Chase

2- Bank of Commerce- were they merged into something? (not to be confused with Commerce Bank, recently taken over by TD Bank)

3 - Central State Bank - Do they still exist

4 - Mays Department store. Note the two different signs in two pictures.

5 - Have no clue about the Sanders theather or the coffee shop next to it.

6 - Nice to see two pictures of the same bus taken at different times as indicated by the advertising signs.

Google Street View shows that the buildings are still there, but both are under different names. The theater was showing Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?" at the time the GSV photo was taken, and the cafe next door is now called the Circles Café.

Gray Line (and others) did sightseeing tours in manhattan during those days. The problem of the TA trying it now is that there's no way they'd be able to compete using transit buses vs. the double-deckers.

And in the shot taken at West 34th Street in Manhattan, there is a Zum Zum restaurant in the backround. I never ate there (I was too young to make those decisions), although there was one at Kings Plaza when that mall first opened.

To use express buses on weekends to generate revenue. The culture loop buses used soft seat buses which ran on the express buses weekdays. Since they didn’t want to run weekend express buses at the time, they used them on culture loops.

Seeing a reply to an old thread from 2009 made me look up the rest of the thread. Unfortunately the site with the photos referenced in the thread no longer exists. Worse, the Wayback Machine seems to have never archived that site either.

One photo I was looking for in particular redirects to this URL:

which returns "Server not found."

nycsubway.org still has images, but only from the past 3 years, apparently.

n addition to the limited buses mentioned in a previous post there was a time in the 1970's when we had "Culture Buses."
The starting dates for these were;

M-41 Culture Bus I on September 1, 1973

B-88 Culture Bus II on September 20, 1973.

Bx-56 Culture Bus III on 9/28/74. This route was discontinued on December 1, 1974 due to lack of ridership. We didn't have a lot of culture in The Bronx in those days and if you planned to travel through the South Bronx you needed a flack jacket and an M-16 (the rifle, not the bus route).

All the Culture Buses were TA (as opposed to OA) operated using express bus equipment.

Pictures of the M41 in service seem to all have MaBSTOA labeling on the buses. I do wonder why M41 was chosen? Or B88 was chosen? M41 was the franchise route number for the M10.

M41 was assigned out of the 100th Street (now Tuskegee Airmen) depot, thus it is thought of as a MaBSTOA route, whilst B88 used buses that were TA-labeled.
