December 6, 1942 - The Book of Wartime Service Changes

Fifth Avenue Coach Company
In accordance with U.S. Office of Defense Transportation (ODT) orders imposed on December 1 mandating a 15 percent reduction in bus mileage, and additional directives from the New York State Public Service Commission, changes to the following routes are hereby put into effect:
- Overnight service is suspended outright on the 2 - Fifth and Seventh Avenues, 3 - Fifth, St. Nicholas and Convent Avenues, 4 - Fifth and Fort Washington Avenues, 5 - Fifth Avenue-Riverside Drive, 6 - 72nd Street Crosstown, 15 - Jackson Heights, 16 - Elmhurst Crosstown, 19 - Fifth Avenue-Riverside Drive and 20 - 57th Street Crosstown lines; basically, no buses operate at all from within the 9 to 11 P.M. hours to the 6 to 8 A.M. hours depending on the route and the day.
- The 6 - 72nd Street Crosstown line's western terminus is cut back from 72nd Street and Central Park West to 72nd Street and Broadway; it will be restored to CPW after the end of the war.
- The 20 - 57th Street Crosstown line, which had been terminating west at West 42nd Street and 12th Avenue since July 5, 1939, is truncated back to its prior west end at 55th Street and 12th Avenue. Unlike with the 6, 20's western terminus will remain at 55th and 12th through to its 1974 renumbering as M28, up to September 10, 1989 when it is again renumbered, as M57, and its western terminus moved to 73rd Street and Broadway.
- The 19 - Fifth Avenue-Riverside Drive line is reduced to a rush-hours only service, running in the mornings and afternoons on weekdays, mornings on Saturdays, and no service at all on Sundays. This will basically remain the status of this route up to its discontinuance on March 1, 1962, due to a strike. (See below for subsequent history.)
- Service is discontinued on the 9 - Fifth Avenue, 57th Street, Broadway and 72nd Street line. This route - which traveled from Washington Square to 72nd Street and Central Park West - started on or about August 5, 1900, but had run irregularly prior to 1919 and was out of service entirely from September 15, 1932 to December 18, 1936. From 1922 to 1932 it terminated at Astor Place. This elimination will prove permanent.

Amsterdam Avenue between 71st and 110th Streets is converted to one-way northbound, and Columbus Avenue between 110th and 65th Streets is made one-way southbound, completing a process for those two particular avenues begun three years and one month before. Changes to the following bus routes are put into effect as a result:
- 7 - Broadway, Columbus and Lenox Avenues: Northbound buses extended farther north along Broadway between 65th and 71st Streets, and rerouted northbound on Amsterdam Avenue between 71st and 106th Streets and eastbound on 106th Street between Amsterdam and Manhattan Avenues
- 11 - Ninth and Amsterdam Avenues: Southbound buses rerouted eastbound on Cathedral Parkway (110th Street) between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues, and southbound on Columbus Avenue between 110th and 65th Streets and beyond
- 17 - 79th Street Crosstown: Eastbound buses rerouted northbound on Amsterdam Avenue between 79th and 82nd Streets, eastbound on 82nd Street between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues, and southbound on Columbus Avenue between 82nd and 81st Streets

Starting this date, a new alternate, rush-hours only branch of the 5 - Fifth Avenue-Riverside Drive line begins service. It differs from the main branch in that it travels through Riverside Drive up to 157th Street rather than 135th Street. It is, in essence and all but name, a de facto revival of the route path of the old No. 19 bus that had been discontinued in 1962. This branch will operate until 1988 when it is finally discontinued for good due to low ridership.
