Is There a Problem With the Digital Arrival Time Displays at Bus Stops? |

They were installed in the past three years or so.No, many local councilpersons were responsible for securing the funds to have them installed in their districts. Each of them had press releases and or ceremonies taking credit for they number of signs they were responsible for installing. They were never regarded as a replacement for paper signs for all bus stop poles, but for major intersections. Headlines like Kallos responsible for 160 signs. Many also criticized these signs as wasteful, saying most have smart phones. Advocates for the elderly thought the signs were a good idea. |

Okay, thanks for mentioning Kallos. I searched around and came up with this article from 2019 regarding complaints about signs that weren't working. In 2019 the article says there 500 of them. From another article I figure each one costs about $20,000. Apparently the Department of Transportation maintains them. Also they began installing them in 2014.Bus Countdown Signs |

It's the type of sign being used that is ridiculous as every sign only displays three routes no matter how many routes serve that stop which is a huge waste for stops with only one line and an inconvenience for more than three. Some stops have it right before the first stop on a route such as the Q72 stop at Junction and Horace Harding (DEP Building) where the countdown display ONLY shows the next bus coming within 2-3 minutes before it arrives as the bus has to start at the first stop at 63 drive before appearing on the countdown screen; meaning a bus can be 5-10 min away and that ever-so useful countdown clock will simply restate that there is no next available bus with "--" on the display.If I had to guess, the lowest bidder for electronic bus stop signs was selected and this was the result. So now every stop that doesn't have exactly three bus lines serving it has a sign with a unnecessary amount of displays waiting to countdown a bus that doesn't exist or leaving out other routes of importance (on 99 Street by Horace Harding a stop is served by the QM10, 11, 40 and Q38. The sign at that stop has displays for the Q38, QM10 and QM40 but left out the QM11, which is likely the busiest route at that stop, basically telling QM11 riders that they don't get a countdown clock for that stop because those three screens are already used by other routes (while many more around the city sit unused). |

I forgot to mention that the bus shelters were designed to show real time arrivals at every bus shelter. That rectangle above the ad was supposed to be the real time clock, before it was turned into another ad panel.The bus shelter company never installed these clocks as they were supposed to under the contract, and apparently the city never gave a damn or enforced the contract. I wonder if anyone has any information about this. It would take some research as these shelters were installed awhile ago. |

There is a box on a pole (the only one I've seen anywhere) on 61st. St. @ Grand Ave. in beautiful Maspeth Queens which had the arrival times for the Queens Plaza bound Q39 and the Grand Ave./64th St. bound B57.That arrival box no longer works. But why they had the arrival times for the B57 in the first place I'll never know because the last stop is the next stop. So who is going to board @ 61st St/Grand Ave.? |

I wouldn't blame the lowest bidder. The bidder doesn't decide the configuration of the sign. Blame the idiots at DOT. They probably figured that most stops would never have more than three routes stopping there and arbitrarily decided on that number. They didn't feel it was worth the extra expense to show four or five routes given the small percentage of bus stops having five routes. Of course it would have been cheaper to make more signs for one route and a few for four or five routes. But it's this city's notion that one size fits all is always the correct approach that prevented any imaginative thinking. |

The signs were not installed because the estimated advertising the shelters were to generate was far below the cities estimates and the amount of maintenance due to vandals smashing the glass was far above estimate . Adding the additional advertising panel was a make good in the contract . |
