The real reason for Artics on the B1

Posted by davidy on Tue Jun 30 21:43:26 2020

NYCT ordered more than 150 artics for the L shuttle, and when the shuttle was canceled these artics had no plan for regular service to replace older buses, so they have been sitting unused since than. So transit is looking for new routes to use these extra artics o. Now that Upk is getting artics the NEW buses are going to the Bronx and Upk gets the old beat up junk. But in reality when a depot gets a new type of bus collisions go up, and the fleet gets dinged and banged up, so it is not really a bad idea.

Newly delivered artics have not been kept just sitting around. They have all been used including the newest artics at LGA.

With the need for L shuttle buses, 40' buses have been scrapped earlier than planned. Like the balance of the RTS' and most of the early Orion VII OG's.

The artics are Excelsiors as we all know.

Ulmer Park got articulated Excelsiors for the same reason Grand Ave.(B38) & Casey Stengel.(Q12) got them. Uniformity of the fleet since all 3 depots already have Excelsior 40'ers. Many inventory parts are the same and the mechanics don't have to repair Nova's for example. A completely different bus. The newest artics are generally on SBS routes.

I'd rather have these than say those beat up Novas than those beat to hell former SBS buses from the B44 or M15.

This is Why the B1 should be extended all the way down 86 St to terminate at Shore Rd & 86 St & use the southbound Street on Shore Rd
to terminate the B1 bus.

I hope that this extension will be considered as part of the Brooklyn Bus Service Redesign Draft Report.

YES agree-actually it should be Shore Road & 88st,,this was the Terminal many years ago for some B16 buses that didn't operate all the way to Shore Road & 4th Avenue. Upon returning back North-the bus could simply turn left on 88th St and left again on Narrows Avenue and then right onto 86st.

Lots of complaints will result if there is no access from the very busy medical center at 91st/Shore Road to the 86th/4th subway, currently served by the B16. The B16 is fine as it is. Bay Ridge residents are very vocal. Hopefully the "redesign" fades away.

Which is what I proposed back in 1978.
