B99 Overnight Line

Posted by GojiMet86 on Fri Jun 26 10:44:56 2020

From user Flatbush SBS Duece in the NYCTForums:

New Over Night route out of Flatbush Depot starting Sunday June 28, 2020.

B99 will start from Nostrand Have/Flatbush ”Junction” to Manhattan W 58th Street. This route is mainly due to the train service being out of service during the COvID CLEANING over night especially the number 2 train. The bus will run like a local B44 route and turn off to Eastern pkwy heading towards Flatbush ave and straight to Manhattan Bridge.

Right now operators out of Flatbush are currently doing line training. Management are considering this route to remain until further notice for a possibility for operators to pick as a new work in the future.

A nighttime only bus line in NYC! Has there ever been one before? I mean a whole new line, not a tiny offshoot from an existing one.

They should do something similar with bus routes going into Bay Ridge like a combination B-37/63 but on 4th Ave.

Correct. Along with the BxM1/2, BxM11, BM3, QM6, and most of the X68 (service starts at 4am)

There should be more B103-like routes in a hypothetical nightbus system with no subways, though perhaps more pick-up/drop-off points can be added if ridership is low enough and the bus isn't stopping much anyway (so not much need for zoned-expresses or highway running, which are somewhat characteristic of the B103).

Agreed, but maybe routes that are a little more direct than the B103. Instead of running straight up Flatbush Avenue, it takes a grand tour of Windsor Terrace to get Downtown?

It depends on what else is running. For example in said hypothetical system, let's say a bus comes up from Bay Ridge but then goes and runs through the Carey (Battery) tunnel to get to Manhattan. That leaves Park Slope, etc. vacant, to be filled in with maybe something like an extended B68 that originated in Coney Island, if not something as indirect as the B103 from Canarsie.

According to the Remix map, the overnight BM2 serves Park Slope along Hamilton and Prospect Avenues, and also connects to the B61 and B63, which leaves Park Slope pretty well covered in the current network. If you want to get to the more transit dependent Brownsville or East New York areas however then good luck.

Wow, it’s really happening. Looking forward to finding out what depot(s) will operate the route, and if it inspires similar-style routes around the city.

Where are the 24 hour bus routes relative to these avenues? That might be a clue. You want to run, I suppose, where the other routes aren’t. The M11 on 9th and 10th Avenues does not run all night.

Only a 60 minute running time? Seems pretty tight. Also seeing some shades of the old B51 and B71. I wonder if it will do the same thing the B71 did on Eastern Parkway. The B71 used to operate down the median of the Parkway, but the bus stops themselves were confusingly placed on the service roads, which probably caused many people who weren't familiar with the route to miss their bus. A rider once told me that the stops were placed on the service road because you can't put a bus stop on a parkway, but I'm not sure how true that was.

I stand corrected, I'm seeing Orion VIIs on it right now, weird because I saw them doing route training on the artics.

With it being nearly impossible to predict demand, I'd wager they are readying artics as a backup.

Can only do it with DOT permission which they haven't given in over 40 years which is why there is no B1 bus stop at Avenue Y. There are stops south on Ocean Parkway south of Avenue Z because they have been there for over 70 years.

Ocean Parkway is unusual in that it is also a NY State Route. It is designated Reference Route 908H, but no 'NY908H' signs are posted on Ocean Parkway.

No. The B21 operated on Ocean Parkway south of Avenue Z since before the Belt Parkway (which opened in 1939). The B1 between X and Z dates back to 1978.

Thanks for the information. You'd figure that the MTA would have at least put up a sign directing riders to the main road at those stops, especially since the B71 struggled to attract decent ridership, but I suppose the status quo was good enough for the lazy and reactionary MTA management at the time.

From the description... I think the routing is 8th Ave n/b, right turn onto W 58th e/b, right turn onto Broadway s/b, then right turn on W 57th w/b, left turn onto 9th Ave s/b...

I think (the current routing) is a good plan as 6th and 7th Ave is already covered by the M7, and with the B99 on 8th and 9th Avs... That provides some north/south service further west in midtown.

It would be interesting, after having overnight extensions over the years, such as the R to Whitehall, the 3 to TImes Square, expresses-turned-local in Manhattan such as the 2 and the Q, and more, if ultimately it's decided to just shut the whole system down!

I somehow don't think that is going to happen. DeBozo is definitely a lame duck and will be replaced and Cuomo’s chances of being reelected are diminishing.
