NJT 5-year capital plan - buses

Posted by kcram3500 on Tue Jun 16 13:16:47 2020

NJ Transit's recently released 5 year capital program shows some interesting and significant plans for the bus system.

Bus Fleet - Once the MCI contract is complete, the new transit/suburban replacement will begin. The plan notes that "most" of the NABIs in northern NJ will be replaced with artics. Now, "most" can mean as low as 50.1%, but that would be a major change to the local fleet. All-electric buses will be part of the short-term plan, starting with 68 40-footers and 32 artics. NJT says they expect the bus fleet to be 100% electric by 2040.

Bus Garages - In addition to the already announced Ridgefield Park garage, there is a plan for another new northern garage. NJT announces in the plan they wish to replace the 4 oldest garages that have not yet received significant rehabilitation: Market Street (built in 1903), Big Tree (1916), Fairview (1945), and Oradell (1960). Ridgefield Park will replace Oradell and will likely be a replacement (temporary or permanent) for Fairview. The second new garage, if located in the Clifton area, could cover both Market Street and Big Tree. New garages will be designed to handle 45-foot coaches, 60-foot artics, and the upcoming all-electric fleet with the necessary charging capacity. Ridgefield Park is also expected to include a park & ride lot, which would alleviate the load at Vince Lombardi.

Bus Infrastructure - In addition to a number of smaller projects, the 1500-space North Bergen Park & Ride lot would receive a multi-level parking garage that would add 2000 more spaces.

Some NJT NABI buses go to PABT. Can all the parallel bus lanes stations handle artics ?

Between pandemics and lawlessness, this is the only "optimisitic" plan that calls for hordes of people commuting I've seen.

Most of them can - NJT has been running artics in the PABT since the mid 80s with the Volvos, so they know where artics fit.

I think this is the time window where new bus garage construction can be accelerated. Depending on the political environment, I think they should also get as many buses and railcars in the pipeline as possible, even if NJT has to borrow to do it. That way, other agencies can tag onto their orders when their houses get back in order.

I heard a rumor that NJT was $6B short. Is that on the capital expenditure side?

They received $1.4B in operating funding from WashDC and asked for another $1.2B - so almost half of that ~$6B figure was from known operating shortfalls, and they'll probably ask for more as the dust settles during reopening phases.

All of these agencies should be scaling their service based on demand until demand improves. Metro-North has been the best at doing that. This is a great time to bring in cranky buses and bring them up to par.
