[PHOTOS] 1964-65 World's Fair Greyhound Buses

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sat Apr 4 19:57:04 2020

From what I was told, the suburban buses ended up in San Francisco after the fair closed.
But, where did the transit buses go ?

Were the Suburbans autoamatic or manual trans ?

I know the transits were automatic, and vaguely remember them having all longitudinal seating.

One of the Fishbowl books said that. I think Milwaukee bought theirs from one of the Queens privates.

Do you have any photos of those tan colored Mercedes buses that were shuttles in the airports in the 1960's ? I vaguely remember their certificate lettering to belonging to Carey.

The picture of the tractor train is from the 1939-40 World's Fair. A few of these are still operating on the Wildwood, NJ boardwalk.

The transits did have all longitudinal seating. Around that time the NYCTA was ordering buses which had all longitudinal seating in the front while retaining cross seating in the rear. A friend of mine commented that the TA would love to have the World’s Fair buses as soon as they became available

I recall seeing, I think it was at the GM pavilion, a prototype “new look” bus on display that was different from the fishbowls, but I can't recall if it was a prototype for the RTSs or something different.

TA probably did not opt to buy the ex-Greyhound WF buses because the rear doors were the old style jackknife panels under driver control. Since 1957 every TA bus was ordered with the newer push-type doors under passenger control.

I think that was a Turbo bus or something.

RTS's were not for another 12 years. Nobody knew what an ADB bus was back then.

I believe the first conceptual drawings would have been 1971. There’s a photo of an early prototype dated January, 1975 in the Bus collection on nycsubway.org.

I do, however, remember the open vehicles from the 1964-65 Fair. They were where I first heard the Greyhound jingle "Go Greyhound, and leave the driving to us", played instrumentally on the vehicle's horn.

Grehound had four types of vehicles at the 1964-65 World's Fair. There were the sightseeing buses with the windows in the roof, the transit buses which ran arond the perimeter of the fair, the "glide-a-ride" tracotr trains and the escorter.

The escorter featured a seat for four people in the front and the driver/ guide rode behind you.

Several of the tractor trains went to the Bronx Zoo after the fair. One set went to the New York Botanical Gardens as the "Floral Flyer"> The sightseeing buses when to Gray Line Sightseeing.
