Tuscarora Almanac – March 31 – April 1, 1936 – The Book of Last and First Runs

March 31, 1936 is the last day of streetcar service on New York Railway’s 116th Street Crosstown Line.

April 1, 1936 will be the first day of bus service operated by New York City Omnibus Corporation. The route will be designated as No. 20 116th Street Crosstown.

It was probably a huge coincidence that the new #20 bus line's franchise number as assigned by the Bureau of Franchises was M-20 - just as it was likely coincidence that the 14th Street Crosstown route would be designated by NYCO as #14. Given how the route numbers they assigned differed wildly from what the BoF had designated.

Who would have also thought that, 40 years later and for a few years thereafter, this route would be assigned out of the former FACCo depot/garage on 132nd Street where, until the 1962 strike, another Route 20 - by 1976 known as the M28 57th Street Crosstown - had been based out of.
