Tuscarora Almanac for February 18

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Tue Feb 18 06:50:48 2020

Tuscarora Almanac – February 18, 1984 – The Book of Last Runs

The Bronx, New York
Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority
Bronx Division

MaBSTOA discontinues service on the Bx-21 Bronx-Astoria Line.

This route began operating on July 11, 1936 concurrent with the opening of the Triboro Bridge. It ran between East 138th Street-Southern Boulevard in the Bronx and 37th Street-24th Avenue in Astoria. It was designated as route “TB” and was operated by the New York City Omnibus Corporation. It was re-designated as the “Bx-21”. Old timers from the Bronx will recall that the Bx-21 number had previously been used by the Pelham Bay Park bus and was subsequently reassigned to the Boston Road-Morris Park Avenue line.

At the point the Bruckner Boulevard-Astoria Boulevard leg of TB was renumbered Bx21 in 1974, it and the other two (M34 Lexington Avenue-Wards/Randalls Island and M35 Lexington Avenue-Astoria Boulevard) were assigned out of 100th Street depot, but by 1975 they were all transferred to 132nd Street depot (as was the ex-NYCO M20 116th Street Crosstown). In the interim (as of 1976) M34 had been ixnayed, its route to Wards Island folded into M35, and by the next decade would have been back at 100th(?); meanwhile in its last few years of existence this Bx21 would have been, from what someone said, situated at the Walnut Depot in the Bronx.

My late mom was actually one of the few riders of the old Bx21 back in the 70s. She lived in Astoria and worked in a factory in the S. Bronx.

I rode it once back in the fifties when it was run by NYC Omnibus. The Bronx Terminal was in an hard to get to location.

Do you remember which buses were used for the route when you rode it? I know as of the late 1940's they used Yellow 740's . . .

In the 1950's TB routes used NYC Omnibus GM TDH-4509's

It seems that they just ran a route to the closest point in the Bronx to turn around and made no effort to have a more useful route.

Sounds like that was so as not to encroach too much into STS territory.

During the 1939/40 New York World's Fair , New York City Omnibus had a route that started at 138 ST Mott Haven RR Station , ram along 138 St, across the Triboro Bridge, Astoria Blvd, 108 St to the Corona Gate. The fare was 25 cents.

The round trip fare was 25 cents - one-way was 15 cents. The fare to the Fair from 138 St. and Jackson Avenue was only 10 cents.

All regular Triboro bus routes were 10 cents, double the regular fare.

Yes, but the one from 138 Street/Jackson Avenue was only the same ten cents to the Fair as it was to Astoria. not the extra nickel that NYCO charged from 138 Street/Concourse.

Only the special 138 St line went to the Fair. The regular route ended at Steinway St in Astoria

Unless I'm missing something, that's not what's shown on the NYCO 1939 map (excerpt below).

I wonder why the 10 cent fare via the TBB was only leaving Queens and not going towards Queens. It’s also interesting that the fare to Queens was only 5 cents without any surcharge for going over the bridge. As I recall, in the 1960s, passengers on the Q44 going over the Whitestone Br were charged an extra nickel in both directions supposedly to pay for the toll. Passengers entering would pay the extra nickel and receive a receipt which the driver would collect from each passenger at the last stop before the bridge in each direction. Diid that eventually also happen on the TB routes?

Those fares appear to be just to Randall's or Ward's Islands. It was ten cents between Astoria and the Bronx or East Harlem in both directions.

Most lilely the case but the fare schedule is a bit confusing. It probably should have read “fare between bronx and Astoria in both directions 10 cents."
