Question about the Brooklyn B15 bus.

Posted by Chicago44 on Sun Jan 12 15:36:01 2020

Since the QT% is proposed to operate along New Lots Av, what will happen to the B15 if the QT% is implemented, will the B15 be discontinued or be rerouted along Linden Blvd.

That is the QT5.

I thought it would be rerouted to Linden. But the QT 5 pGe says it replaces the B15, so I guess they expect you to take the QT5 and transfer for the Q10 on Lefferts Blvd. That's why it probably makes so few stops in Queens. The number of stops on New Lots Ave is anyone's guess. The B47 will probably transfer to the QT 5.

They'll never get away with eliminating local bus service along 101st Avenue in Ozone Park & Richmond Hill. They should instead extend the QT7 (Linden Blvd.) route from Queens into Brooklyn via the Conduit Avenue & Linden Blvd. to serve New Lots Avenue and then serve Brookdale Hospital via New Lots Avenue or Linden Blvd. rather than the QT5 route. Right now they propose having the QT7 traveling from Cross Bay Blvd. to the Gateway Center Mall via the Belt Parkway to the Erskine Street exit.

They won’t get away with eliminating all the stops they asked for but will settle on stops every quarter to half mile, so half of them will be removed anyway.

They may argue that 101 ave has parallel bus routes no further than 2 to 3 blocks away.

They also increased the spacing of bus stops on Liberty Avenue on the QT67 route (former Q112 route) from one to three blocks apart to seven to eight blocks apart. Compound that with the one to two avenue blocks between 101st Avenue and Liberty Avenue and you could and a person could be walking to up to a half a mile in walking. That's not good for bus ridership!

But yet plenty of people walk a half mile to the subway...shoot look at the gap between the B44 and B46, and those routes are some of the busiest routes in the city.

People are willing to walk further to a subway than a local bus. Part of the reason is that subway trips on the average are much longer than bus trips.

As far as the B44 and B46 being busy, people do walk further to them. Part of the reason is that the headways are better than most routes. What the MTA is proposing in Queens, is wide stops and poor headways. Would people walk a half mile for a route with a 20 minute headway? Definitely not.

Also, even with the high patronage on the B44 and B46, the large service gap between them accounts for a high usage of car services in the area. Just stand outside Kings County Hospital at Brooklyn Avenue, and you will see a line of cabs waiting for the people who do t want to walk to the B44 or B46 or because they don't want to pay two fares to make a trip. I don't see where the MTA is even looking at car services or dollar vans in their studies.

I can think of other reasons why people leaving a hospital might not want to take a long walk to a bus.

I didn't say the extra fare was the only reason. It's the walk and the extra fare.

My apologies, I misread your statement. I have added emphasis above to show the bit I missed.

I wonder if the B14 would be extended to JFK Airport if the B15 is replaced by the QT5.

I certainly doubt it.. Why would they do that?
