I agree with most of those, but there are exceptions to every rule. It may be improper to hold a bus for another passenger when the buses are running close together but when the headway on a bus route is 20 min or more or even an hour as overnight, it wouldn’t hurt the schedule that much especially since at least in NY many schedule are padded to account for unforeseen problems. I personally know of cases where a bus driver is running as much as 10 min early on a one hour headway meaning if a person missed that bus he/she would have an inordinate amount of time for the next bus which that passenger would have been able to get if the bus were not running ahead of schedule. Another operator I used to come home with late at night would leave the terminal as much as 10 min late and then speed like the dickens bouncing me all over the bus as he hit every pothole on the route. By the way, just because the headway on a line is supposed to be x number on minutes it doesn’t mean that the following bus is necessarily running on time and is often running on the followers time causing even more delays.

I can't imagine any possible excuse for that.

It's rare , but it does happen. Any bus driver who is running hot and has any scruples at all will pull over and kill the time. Septa has a 2 minute rule , and if you are hotter than that , you risk a write-up. Central Control tracks at the buses , and if someone is watching , (you can't watch every bus) you got banged for being early. I have been on Suburban routes that have been 5 hot at a time point, the operator pulls over and kills about 3 minutes.

When I wait for my bus, , before I walk to the bus stop,I'm tracking it on my cell phone, so I don't have wait long. I've seen the bus be 4-5 early at times. The route I take, starts at point in West Chester , Pa. and there is no good place to pull over and kill time.Once you get out of town, you can pull over, if you re hot.

Isn't it just a matter of paying attention?

- Never leave early in the first place.
- Know when you should be at each stop.
- If traffic is light, just spend half a minute extra, or whatever it takes, at each stop. Don't wait until it piles up to be several minutes.

Good ideas. If you tend to be early, slow down so you catch a lot of red lights, I've seen drivers do that.

I've seen plenty of drivers stop at a green light till it turns red, and then go on the next green.
