Other than the fact that it uses battery to go off wire, this used to be used in Seattle, and years ago by Public Service in NJ.

The Public Service All Service buses were gasoline powered, when they did not take power from overhead wires.

Thank you, Spider-Pig. I was with a retired TT operator on Thursday, from Dayton , Ohio.,and he said their new TTs operate the same way, charge on-line, battery use off line. When they come back off battery to regain wire, they use those wiring pans for automatic operation.

It comes in handy in case for some reason the cars gst stuck in a power gap while going upgrade. In the mid 19990s, the ERA had their national convention in San Francisco and a trolley coach went got gapped when going upgrade near the Geneva carhouse. A bunch of rail buffs waiting for a muni fantrip car went to the disabled coach and pushed it back dwon grade till it was on power at which point the operator was able to give it a clear shot across the intersection. With thes e new trolley coaches that will no longer be a problem.

Septa uses EPU motors ,diesel, for non-power sections. If you automatically lower the poles from the button near the driver , and they lower, but these are not hooked, they dangle, you can go 8 MPH. If you get out of your seat and lock them down you can go 24.9 MPH. This setting of 24.9 is "just" below the number. 25 would require a PA. State Emissions sticker on each coach, so they avoid that. When you are on full electric , the top speed is 38 MPH, good for our city streets,

I agree with you. The cost of living in San Francisco is outrageous. Many MUNI operators have a long commute to their districts, because they have to live far away from the City of San Francisco. Ca.

To me... If primary method of operation is to utilize the overhead wires... It's a trolley(bus).

That sounds like cheating to me.

And then there's this:

“To me, they’re better buses,” said Kam Wong, who was waiting for the 1-California at Sacramento and Montgomery streets Friday, holding a small Chihuahua on a leash.

Is this some new thing on buses?

PET POLICY
Pets may not ride Muni during peak hours:
Monday through Friday
5:00 am – 9:00 am
3:00 pm – 7:00 pm

During off-peak hours, only one pet per Muni vehicle is allowed to ride.
Dogs must be leashed and muzzled and can only ride on the lap of the rider or under their seat; all other pets must be carried in a small closed container on the lap of the rider or under their seat.
Pet owners or guardians must pay a fare equal to their own for their pet to ride.

I don't recall ever seeing a pet policy like this anywhere else, most systems that allow pets require them to be in some type of carrier.
