The obvious reason would be to dodge another vehicle or a pedestrian.

Another reason that in-street elevated line posts and bus routes are a bad mix. As was alluded to in the Queens bus report, but for different reasons.

This is all I knew growing up in the Bronx and years later I was suprised to see els in Brooklyn and Queens which had the support pillars on the sidewalk which is also safer for people at bus stops.

The only reason I can see for the difference in where the columns are placed is the actual curb to curb width of the street over which the el structure travels. Narrow avenues such as Bway Bkln or Roosevelt Ave can have the columns on the sidewalk whereas wider avenues like Westchester Av in the Bx or 86St in Bkln have to have the columns in the street otherwise the support girders for the el would have to be excessively long to reach the curb

Yes, I did (later) notice of that as well with not so wide streets like Roosevelt Ave and Jamaica Ave vs. those Bronx streets like Boston Rd (except the 2 blocks between 179th and Tremont Ave), Southern Blvd, Jerome and so on which are all wider.
