The only reason I can see for the difference in where the columns are placed is the actual curb to curb width of the street over which the el structure travels. Narrow avenues such as Bway Bkln or Roosevelt Ave can have the columns on the sidewalk whereas wider avenues like Westchester Av in the Bx or 86St in Bkln have to have the columns in the street otherwise the support girders for the el would have to be excessively long to reach the curb |
