Wouldn't it have been on or about September 10, 1995, that what had been the 106th Street branch of M19 - 96th Street Crosstown (the only branch at that point to bear that old number - the main branch had been M96 since 1993) had its route numbering changed to M106 (and its transition points changed from Third / Lexington Avenues to Madison / Fifth Avenues)? I seem to recall that first turned up in the February 1996 Manhattan bus map, as well.

I presume the 1988 bus map was also the last to refer to M26 before it became M23; the 12th Avenue branch of M27 before it became M50 (as opposed to the Port Authority branch which remained M27); and M29 before it became M66. Or would that have been the 1987 map that was the last we would see of M8 - Grand Street and the rush-hour M5 that traveled through Riverside Drive up to 157th Street?

But it's interesting that the "new" M103 was launched six years to the day after the "old" M103 was ixnayed (actually, if you see my own Bus Almanac, merged with M28 - 57th Street Crosstown to create M57).

The 106th Street Branch of the M-19 96th Street Crosstown bus line began running on January 7, 1974 replacing the former M-107 route. The last map to show is as a branch was dated June 1995. The first map to show it as the M-106 was dated February 1996.

I presume the 1988 bus map was also the last to refer to M26 before it became M23; the 12th Avenue branch of M27 before it became M50 (as opposed to the Port Authority branch which remained M27); and M29 before it became M66. You are correct. The last map to show the 23rd Street Crosstown as the M-26 was the 1988 one. The 1989 mays lists it as the M-26

To add a little bit more history - the current M103 Third-Lexington route is basically the same as the old NYC Omnibus #3 Lexington Ave. route that ran from 1936 until July 1960 when Lexington and Third became a one-way couplet. Afterward, a short turn service ran between 23rd and 125th Streets, which was numbered M101 like the main Surface Transit route but used Fifth Avenue Coach drivers and buses.

I ssem to recall that the M102 originally carried the designation “M101A."

Correct - beginning in March 1969 until summer of 1974, when MABSTOA ended duplicate route numbers and alpha suffixes. In 1974 M101A became M102. Prior to March 1969 it was MABSTOA #2, which was eliminated and re-routed from Madison to Lexington NB and rechristened M101A. This route also had a FACO/NYCO ancestor - Route #4 Lexington-Lenox Aves.
