Additional Express Service

Along with frequency, fast travel times are essential. The need for faster, direct bus service continues to grow. As Nassau County adds jobs, more residents will look for ways to commute as efficiently as possible. Express service would provide faster trips between transit centers, employment hubs, colleges, hospitals, shopping, and entertainment centers. By limiting the number of stops and leveraging technology such as signal prioritization, express buses can reduce trip times by up to 20%. Quicker travel alternatives will help Nassau County to continue to move forward. While there is still a great need for local service, express service provides a faster and smoother trip for customers making longer trips. Express service would run every 5 – 10 minutes during peak periods and every 15- 20 minutes during off-peak times. Currently, only the N6 & N4 feature express service. NICE would hope to add new express service on to the N16, N22, N20 & N24. NICE would also propose to add new express service on Saturday and Sunday.

Shown on the proposed map:

n4X: Freeport-Jamaica

n6X: Hempstead-Jamaica

n20X: Hicksville-Flushing

n22X: Hicksville-Jamaica

n24X: Hicksville-Jamaica

Manhattan Direct Express (MDX)

Nassau is the only Metro area bus system that does not directly serve Manhattan. During the time of increased reliability issues with LIRR and additional auto traffic heading into the city, NICE would support commuters with high-speed, direct service to midtown, near Grand Central Terminal. A train trip from Nassau County to downtown Manhattan means transferring at Penn Station to one or more subway lines. NICE would hope to provide direct service to downtown near Wall Street sometime in the future. Manhattan Direct would use coach service - a different kind of bus, unlike other traditional intra-county services. Trips would start at strategically-placed park & ride lots in Levittown, Hicksville, and Mineola. After making a few more local stops, buses could use the Long Island Expressway HOV lane to Manhattan. A premium fare would be charged – above traditional bus fare but below train fare. Manhattan Direct Service would be fed by local bus routes and community shuttles. Coaches would have padded seats, Wi-Fi, & charging stations. Seats can be reserved via a smartphone app.

Shown on the proposed map:

MDX: Hicksville, Roslyn & Great Neck to Grand Central and Wall Street

MDX: Levittown to Grand Central and Wall Street

MDX: Mineola to Grand Central and Wall Street

MDX: Belmont to Grand Central and Wall Street

This is great news. The new Nassau County Executive seems to be doing a good job.

Those MDX routes will flop, Nice current local bus service is unreliable and LIRR would still be leaps and bounds better than NICE express bus service.

Yep...MDX would have to be profitable to survive. No one is going to subsidize railroad competition.

Correct me if I am mistaken, but last summer, during the time of reduced service to NYP on the LIRR, weren't park and ride/express buses tried out. I don't remember commuters embracing them to the degree expected.

Bring back the N72 to Babylon and restore midday and weekend N79 service...and restore weekend N27 too.

Boardings from Seaford to GCT were very low, a handful of riders per bus.

The only one I see doing reasonably well is the Hicksville one. Perhaps the Roslyn stops may be able to grab riders from the Oyster Bay Branch and from the North Fork Express commuter service. You might be able to get some ridership from Great Neck. Hicksville itself, IDK.

It might be better for the express buses to leave people off at say, 34th & 2nd (there's a lot of hospitals on the East Side with patients/employees. Maybe they could make a stop at 23rd & 1st as well), and then continue down via the FDR. It would be quicker than sitting in traffic trying to stop precisely by Grand Central, and then having to backtrack all the way back to the FDR. Also, it would be a different catchment area than the LIRR once East Side Access opens.

And not for nothing, but if I had to commute to the Grand Central area from Long Island, I would probably take the LIRR to Hunterspoint Avenue and catch the (7) train over there, so it would still probably be faster than their proposed express bus (though I suppose you can say the same thing about Downtown riders coming through Atlantic Terminal)

Nonetheless, I think it's good that they're trying to experiment with express bus service (hopefully with the $2.75 fare applied towards the express fare, like the NYCT/MTA Bus express buses)

I've said for a long time that NY24 (Hempstead Tpke) between Hempstead and Bethpage could really use something into Manhattan (though ultimately CRRLI really needs to be rebuilt), but it seems they just want one stop in Levittown? I'd have to see some more details. What I really don't understand is why try to establish routes to Grand Central when we have ESA coming online?
-Levittown I see as most likely to succeed with Belmont being a close second. If combined, I could see it succeeding.
-Roslyn and Great Neck to Wall St have a decent shot as well since neither is able to get to FBA on a single seat ride (although it's quite idiotic that Roslyn doesn't have 3rd rail, but OB electrification is another discussion), but we already have North Fork Express from Christopher Morley Park at Exit 36.
-Mineola? Seriously? That's just really bad planning. Far from the highway, excellent LIRR service to midtown and FBA (fast connection to Lower Manhattan)
-Hicksville, almost just as bad, but at least it's close to the LIE.

I need more details. Where exactly are they planning on putting the stops? If they're going to waste time traveling into Great Neck station on the way to/from Roslyn, or into both stations on the way to/from Hicksville, I think it's doomed to fail. The achilles heal for this is going to be the LIE through Eastern Queens. Nassau County and the Midtown tunnel has the HOV lane (although the HOV lane does nothing for the Great Neck stop and not much for the Roslyn one either), and if they'd be bold/dumb enough to do express to Lower Manhattan, the new Kosciuszko Bridge combined with the planned bus lanes on the Williamsburg Bridge for the L train replacement buses should keep things moving pretty well.

I do believe express bus service to LI can work, but in very select corridors. It seems they may have gotten one or two right, and that's a big maybe depending on how they want to implement it.
