June 20, 1965 - The Book of Route Extensions

Manhattan, New York
Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Authority

Route 11 - Ninth and Amsterdam Avenues' northern terminus is extended effective as of this date from its prior north end at La Salle Street and Broadway, to 132nd Street and Broadway.

June 20, 1971 - The Book of Route Renumberings

The Bronx, New York
Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority

Route Bx-17 - Allerton Avenue is renumbered as Bx-15C, thus making it another branch/spinoff of the Bx-15 route. On September 12, 1971, it will be extended to Co-op City. (This route will revert to the earlier Bx-17 moniker on July 1, 1974 as part of the massive route renumberings in Manhattan and parts of Queens and the Bronx.)

It was limited to Manhattan and Bronx routes so those affected in Queens also ran in those boroughs.

15 = M32 Fifth Avenue-Jackson heights
16 = Q89 Elmhurst Crosstown
TB = M35 Manhattan-Astoria
TB = Bx21 Bronx-Astoria

Check The New York Times "2 Boroughs' Buses Get New Numbers" June 20, 1974, for othe routes.

In the immediate period before the renumbering, what became M32 had been QM15, and Q89 was QM16. Made sense for the former but not the latter, on the face of it.

I know that you posted views of mylar rollsigns with those route designations (and it was good to see them) but they were rarely, if ever, on the buses. I know that I never saw one and I lived in Jackson Heights at the time.

Which is funny in a sense, since both QM15/M32 and QM16/Q89 were both out of 54th Street depot in Manhattan. Imagine . . .
