I expect the MTA to replace the entire Cruiser fleet with these at an accelerated rate if the first buses perform well. The maintenance burden of these buses will be lower than the standard lift coaches.

The front pictures all show the biggest flaw of this design - the sign window is WAY too small for the sign, and too much of the display is cut off and unreadable. Why BMW Designworks thought this was a great idea and why MCI approved and used it are mysteries.

Right, there didn't seem to be that problem in the heyday of GM's Old and New Looks . . .

There's not that problem in the current MCI D-series either - the window is notably larger than the sign and all the characters can be seen from any angle. In that pic with the Bx13 sign, virtually the entire B is gone from view. If the only way a potential passenger can see the reading clearly is from the side sign, it's already too late to flag the bus down!

Neat!!! I work right in the area, and I saw the bus from a distance- but I didn't go over and look-, sadly.

So it's not a double-decker, I see. It somewhat resembles the tour bus I rode in Ireland last year, except that vehicle had a bathroom where the ADA access is on this one.

How many seats are lost compared to the standard MCI cruisers we have today?

54 seats (there are 5 down in the lower level), so a loss of 3 if no wheelchairs are aboard. But with two wheelchairs aboard, there is a 52 passenger capacity, which is 1 more than the high-floor design which loses 6 passengers when both wheelchair locations are used.

Interesting design, then. It looked like an overall loss of interior space.

There was a gain in floor length. The rear bench seat is now all the way to the back of the bus, since the radiators were moved down to the left-rear of the body (like the Prevost X3-45, and most transit buses have used for decades). That partially offset the floor space lost to the new lower level. Without the upper-rear radiators, a rear window is now an option... MCI claims for ambiance.

There will be a more traditional high-floor version (D40 CRT and D45 CRT) that use the conventional lift instead of the low-floor entry - you'll see those in a couple of years as the NJT order winds down. Once NJT gets all their units, the current D4000/D4500 design will be discontinued.

Is this the 1st time an MCI has had a back window since the MC-5's of the late 1960's ?

If you scroll through the pictures on the MCI website in the J4500 section, there is a pretty good picture of the window offering.

I think it's the first time any NYC bus will have a back window since the last Fishbowls and Flxibles retired.

the 90 BTE Nova LFS (8000-8089 from 2011 I believe), sure do- more than half of them are in Queens, and I see them pretty regularly. I can't speak to the LFSA, I don't remember.
