Not really.
The situation during the 70s was artificially created by greed.
The SAME situation exist today, but handled in a different manner, such as Gas tax, artificially created inflation, and other equally ridiculous explanations.

We are made to believe its over because of affordability.

I recall several roads whose old speed limit was 60. Today, no NYS roads have a limit of 60. It's either 55 or 65.

So then what were you trying to convey in post 324724? That implied you knew of a bunch of such roads.

Counting backwards would be a bit awkward, though. The Berkshire connector+I87 Thruway is 3 miles longer than the free part of 90 (that really needs to get named something). So when they join, you'd have to pick one to be continuous and discard the other.

There *is* a natural solution, though. Once upon a time, there was a plan to route I90 concurrently with 87 between 24 and the Berkshire connector. If so, the thruway and I-90 would have completely contiguous numbering throughout. It would just end at a seemingly arbitrary number at the MA border (which it basically does anyway). As for the current unnamed "free part of 90", the idea was to make 88 concurrent with 90 and have it exit at 24, and the free part would be renumbered I-88. They could do dual mileposts for the brief stretch of concurrency (do they do that anywhere?).

You mean 324274, I guess. It's pretty clear. Most major NYS expressways are still at 55. Only some stretches of the Thruway and I-87 in the Adirondacks are at 65. A quick Google search yielded this NYS DOT page: http://www.safeny.ny.gov/spee-ndx.htm#65

"Where can I drive at 65 mph?

Speeds of 65 mph are permitted only on controlled access highways, such as the Northway (I87) or Thruway, that are specifically posted for the 65 mph speed limit. However, even these highways are not posted for 65 mph over their entire lengths. You should be aware of speed zones where 65 mph stretches of highway end and lower speed limits begin. These lower limit areas are generally densely populated, high-traffic locations.

Is New York State planning to raise the speed limit on all roads to 65 miles per hour?

New York has no plans to increase the speed limit to 65 mph on any additional roads."
