Counting backwards would be a bit awkward, though. The Berkshire connector+I87 Thruway is 3 miles longer than the free part of 90 (that really needs to get named something). So when they join, you'd have to pick one to be continuous and discard the other.

There *is* a natural solution, though. Once upon a time, there was a plan to route I90 concurrently with 87 between 24 and the Berkshire connector. If so, the thruway and I-90 would have completely contiguous numbering throughout. It would just end at a seemingly arbitrary number at the MA border (which it basically does anyway). As for the current unnamed "free part of 90", the idea was to make 88 concurrent with 90 and have it exit at 24, and the free part would be renumbered I-88. They could do dual mileposts for the brief stretch of concurrency (do they do that anywhere?).
