When I was working for Western Union in the very early 1960s, I occasionally saw a student bus on the 50 St Xtown route. I believe that at one time all NYCTA required of a candidate for Bus Operator was a valid NYS operator’s license for a minimum number of years (I believe 2). The NYCTA would then train the new appointees for what was then the Class 2 chauffeurs license and even give the road test by agreement with the DMV. I believe that now candidates must have the CDL with passenger endorsement before they will be hired |

It's probably the bus with an intentional defect that competitors have to diagnose and repair. If you notice in the first photo, taken the same day, 8629 is behind 7809 in the procession of buses and does not have the sign hanging on it. |
