Does anyone have a copy of it, or any other NYCDOT Express map? Or does anyone know of a PDF link? I tried looking on their website, but it must have been junked by now.

The NYC DOT Express Bus Route Map was for the private bus lines it oversaw. Not that the private lines are now MTA Bus, NYC DOT is now out of the bus business.

Best I could find out there right now. (Scroll down). Some better views of limited sections here. (Again, scroll down).

I too once owned this map and was sad to have lost it. But now that express buses are included on regular borough bus maps and general information about express buses is much more widespread than a few years back, this map is more just a curious collector's item simply because it was printed.

I have at least two copies. I'll need to see if I can find one. The map was necessary at the time (actualy overdue IMO) because info for the PBL's express routes was not on the NYCTA borough bus maps.

They should and I believe there are still a few other privately operated bus routes.

And since they are implementing SBS and are the lead agency for it, you can't really say they are out of the bus business. They are also responsible for bus stops as well as supervising CEMUSA, the bus shelter company.

What do you think you can do with a PDF? You can PRINT IT OUT SO THAT YOU CAN HAVE A PHYSICAL COPY TO HOLD AND LOOK AT!

Unless they don't want to ruin its value by unfolding it, or unless they don't want to lessen its value by creating more copies, I don't see why no one who has a copy has volunteered to allow it to be scanned so it can be enjoyed by all.

I was the driving force behind the development of the NYC DOT express bus map quite some time ago when I was head of bus service planning for the City of New York. It is reassuring to see so much enthusiasm for a map that has been so long out of print, and for which much of the information has since become dated and obsolete.

The inspiration of the map was the absence of such information elsewhere. While the information might had been incorporated into the bus maps then published by the New York City Transit Authority, the problem was (and I think remains) that the express bus information placed on top of the local bus route information can lead to information overload; the relatively limited utility of the express bus routes can takeover a map reader's attention, to the detriment of a map reader trying to understand the basic route route structure in the various boroughs. Yes, a single map may facilitate transfers between local and express routes, but at the time--and think continuing to this day--those transfers are minimal.

A secondary concern was that there existed at the time some elements within the NYCTA who believed that the express bus routes funded by NYC DOT somehow "competed" against the NYCTA bus routes. Of course, this concern was unfounded because the City contributed financial support to both the NYCTA and privately-operated transit services. Nonetheless, that would have been an issue that no one at the time wanted to open.

The idea and inspiration for the map originated at NYC DOT. Funding for the map was provided by both NYC DOT and NYCTA. The cartographic work was contracted by Command Bus Company using a competitive bidding process. The work was awarded to, and completed by, the transit graphics firm Reineck & Reineck, of San Francisco (a husband and wife team).

It has been been nearly twenty years since I last worked at NYC DOT, and while I looked on my computer to see if I had saved a PDF version of the map, I do not seem to have done so. Perhaps I might a copy some day in the future. Nonetheless, the cartographers, Jack and Gay Reineck, should have a PDF copy backed up in their system. If anyone is willing and able to host a site where the map could be viewed and/or downloaded (I recall the file size being large), and they wanted to make all the logistical arrangements with the cartographers, for hosting the map locally, etc., I would not object to them contacting the Reinecks for a copy of the file (since their client was Command Bus Company, there might be permission issues that, if need be, I might be able to facilitate).

I never liked the idea of showing both express and local routes on the same map. It just clutters up the local map. At least, the portions of the express routes where they operate on highways and make no stops should not be as prominent.

My website is Railfanwindow.com and I currently host thousands of my own photos and some other people's as well. My website is relatively high-performance and unless this Map would generate a ridiculous amount of bandwidth demand, my site should handle it ok.

There are several good transportation graphic artists out there, though in terms of transit map designers given the added dimension of being able to communicate service attributes in addition to geographic attributes. It appears that the WalkNYC maps were produced by a consortium known as the PentaCityGroup, while the NYC DOT bike maps were designed in-house (I have not had involvement with either). It is probably coincidental that you're finding similarities between the NYC DOT express bus route map and these other two designs, and you're seeing reuse of successful graphics techniques rather than purposeful copying.

That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the ability to see and study and appreciate the map. You don't need an original copy to do that. If the people in this thread really only just wanted to have a copy so they could say they have an original copy of the map, then thry would be throwing out offers of large sums of money, which is what it would take to get an original copy of this apparently rare map.

But now OTB has shut down and few people care. It seems that OTB itself was eclipsed by Atlantic City, by a proliferation of lottery games and finally by racinos, which of course were only designed to give the tracks a new purpose and have the state take business back from AC.

Another sport that's declined in popularity is boxing.

I take my grandmother every so often to Aqueduct (leave the woman in front of a slot machine for a few hours and she's as happy as a pig in slop).

Last time we were there when the horses were actually running* I wandered over to the other side of the building to bet on a race and it was actually fairly crowded. Without OTB, it seems some of these guys have actually returned to the tracks.

*weirdly it was during a snow storm. I still have the video of the horse losing badly on my old phone. Mayor Wilhelm's backers through a high holy fit over horses pulling a carriage on a nice day, but racing in snow, that's fine....
