no Gillig new York city bus? |
|
Posted by caine515 on Wed Oct 7 20:32:29 2015 I've always wondered why Gillig never decided to test models for new York city. MSBA,Suffolk Transit,GCTA in Bridgeport,Long Beach and Huntington used phantoms. I remember #5770 as a enginecteat. But why no brt? |

Perhaps the MTA wasn't as impressed with test results for those brands? I was surprised to see Detroit buy Gilligs since they seem to have a reputation for being unreliable. I'm not familiar with them so I'm just speculating. I've been on NJT's NABI's and they don't impress at all compared to the Nova's they replaced. |

NJT had been asking Prevost to build coaches for them since 1982, but until they finally decided to build that dedicated model a couple of years ago, Prevost always declined to participate in NJT's RFPs/bid requests. Gillig has similarly declined requests from larger TAs to keep costs down. Smaller TAs are more likely to buy a more standardized unit - while NYC, NJ, Los Angeles, Chicago are more likely to want heavy customization. |

A smaller firm like Gillig doesn't want to support that customization. Eagle got caught in that mess trying to be more than they were. The NJT Eagle 20s were Eagle's attempt to build an MC-9 from their body. It didn't work out well.Even with the deep pockets of Volvo Truck & Bus behind them, Prevost still doesn't want to redo the windshield of the X3-45 commuter coach to allow a full-size single front sign, even though doing so would get them more interest and orders. That tells me they're still toe-dipping in the pool, while MCI is still willing to cannonball. |

NABI was the only one willing to custom design a bus for NJT. Not only high-floor, but some major components had to put in similar positions as they would be on an MCI. |

The Shaker Test is an additional test that the MTA requires, and is not part of standard Altoona Testing. Gillig buses have never been through the Shaker Test before, and Gillig probably feels that bidding on an MTA contract would be too risky due to this requirement since there is a chance that they might fail. |

Did Hino and Renault at the time the buses were tested fail the shaker test too?? I also remember a MAN Americana tested too..guess that failed as well. |

Gillig Corporation, LLC did begin making larger orders than 35-45, take a look at AC-TRANSIT. They made about 60 Phamtoms30 footers in 1992 and 60 40 footers in 1993. They made 65 40 foot Advantanges in 2013, 64 40 foot Surburbans between 2013 and 2014, and another batch of 66 regular 40 footers in 2014.Now they are going to (if they haven't already) move into a larger plant to make even more, thus adding the option of articulated units.
