Notice that the boundaries for comment extend to Kings Highway and Ave K on the B82 page and into Caesar's Bay on the B6 page.

You'd think someone would Google the term "South Brooklyn" before plastering it all over their site.

I heard you. This is how you should never do a study. You tell people that you want to hear their ideas about improving bus travel in southern Brooklyn, when you couldn't care less about their ideas. You have already decided you will have an SBS route and limited your choices to the B6 and B82. If anyone suggests anything else you simply tell them it is outside the study area.

So what you do, is you take all the problems people tell you about and use it as justification to institute SBS. Late buses - SBS will cure that; overcrowded buses - SBS will cure it. Whatever the problem they mention you claim it will go away with SBS. Meanwhile 70 year old routing problems remain unresolved because those routes are not part of the study.

The way you do a study of south Brooklyn problems is to solicit problems without restriction. If you find most of the complaints or many are specific to the B6 and B82, then you can look to see if SBS or some other solution is warranted. Perhaps a new airport bus is needed. Perhaps it should use the Belt Parkway. But you have already determined if you are going to serve JFK it will have to be along the B6 or B82 routes.

Don't pretend to be objective when in fact you have 90 percent of the plan worked out before you begin your study. That is dishonest. But I would expect no less from the MTA and DOT.

Just the fact that they said South Brooklyn rather than southern Brooklyn shows how little they know about the borough. They probably never even heard that the term South Brooklyn used to be synonymous with Red Hook which in in northern Brooklyn.

Their knowledge of bus route history or route usage is not that much better. The planners have no feel for the system because unless they are bus buffs, they rarely ride the system and make decisions from their ivory tower using numbers on pieces of papers. The bus operators no what is really happening for their small piece of the system they're involved in, but the MTA wouldn't even think of asking them for their opinions as to what may be needed because they believe they have all the answers.

Be prepared to see other obvious mistakes that anyone familiar with the system would never make.

In case anyone is wondering why “South Brooklyn” is north of most of Brooklyn, that is because in the olden times the southern border of the Village of Brooklyn was Atlantic Avenue, (which was called District Street for that reason), and South Brooklyn was thus South of Brooklyn in much the same way that West Hempstead is west of Hempstead (and a part of the Town of Hempstead just as South Brooklyn was part of the Town of Brooklyn). Brooklyn eventually expanded to the rest of Kings County, rendering the name an artifact title, although it lasted as such well into the 20th Century.
