Understanding Terrapin Station

Just about everybody has had an unpleasant encounter with Therapy Station. I finally figured him out.

He craves attention, even negative attention, because it's better than NO attention.

In his universe, he is always right. It's a waste of time trying to prove him wrong, because if he is wrong, he'll never admit it.

He repeats "I'm right, you're wrong" or "I see you gave up so I'm right" or "Proff."

Don't waste your time trying to have an intelligent conversation with him because he doesn't have intelligence.

He does his best to get posters angry so they lash out at him. He just laughs because he succeeded in manipulating. He will twist your words to make himself look good - - at your expense.

Instead, don't get angry and get high blood pressure. Just pity him. You'll find it easier to deal with him.

He doesn't care how many people leave this list because he sees this list like the TV Show "Survivor" where the last person wins.

Simple fix. Don't click on anything he posts. If you don't read it he loses and can't bother anyone.

Correct. But he counts on new posters to fall "into the trap" so there will be a continuous supply to feed his neuroses. This is a general warning because it takes a while to catch on.

I've never had a problem with him. Not once. When he asks a question or engages a debate with me, I read his post and answer it - unlike a number of you who can't seem to communicate without profanity and would prefer to just make it personal when you realize he's right and you have no other comeback. Because when he finds himself mistaken with me, he acknowledges it and apologizes or thanks me for the proper information.

Treat others with civility and respect... you may actually learn something.

I'm happy to read that he gets along with ONE person on this board. That doesn't mitigate what I've written based on the angry messages I've read.

Nostalgia: I agree with you and I can forgive a first time poster who might respond to him. The problem is that many of those responding to him have been here for a while and should know better. Time and again I've come to these boards and the entire page on the screen consists of posts by TS or those responding to him and not one of those posts is worth reading. These guys don't realize what a valuable resource this board is.

Thing is, such a thread as this one provides the very attention that is being sought.

People can be complicated. The Internet has its cons in that you don't know (for sure) what a person looks like or much about them at all. But you have to take advantage of the pros. There's no need to reply to a post right away or at all. (You can therefore choose the emotional state you are in when you reply). You do not need to click on everything or process everything.

I've been doing just fine on these boards for 15 years. If a thread looks like it's going downhill, stop following it, or maybe check in after a couple of days and see if it somehow came back to the topic or something constructive. If someone replies to you with an argument surrounded by negative personal comments, reply to the argument only. If an entire reply, in your judgement, is negative personal comments and truly no argument, then don't reply at all. It's not too hard; it just takes a bit of discipline.

Even a nasty handle can be correct about some things at times, too. Thank him if you learn something, politely offer corrections to any faulty logic you may sense (only if you're sure), and ignore everything else.

Don't ever say "I'm not responding," or fall into the realm of the personal yourself. Then there's no end. To ignore someone, it must be perfect ignorance, without verbally indicating such ignorance!

True this is a great place for bus info and exchanging ideas. As long as we can stick to that and not get caught up in all the drama.

I have done nothing to upset him. Yet whenever I post anything, he is the first to post, Don't believe him. If I don't respond new posters might think he is behaving rationally.

I can count the number of intelligent discussions I have has with him with the fingers on one hand. But the number of times he has made insulting posts numbers h the hundreds. I am not going to try to analyze him.

Ignoring an antagonist usually leads to pissing the antagonist off thus reversing his intent.

I respectfully disagree. They will ultimately catch on that certain behavior is not acceptable if it is ignored (perfectly) long enough.

I agree with you. You posted in the Brooklyn Bus Route thread and Therapy Station responded "Don't believe anything Brooklyn Bus writes" or something to that effect. Your original message wasn't even directed to him.

I got tired of challenging his amateurish behavior in numerous threads so I decided to call him out in ONE thread.

That's true. However, there are always new members who aren't aware of Therapy Station's past so they unintentionally keep fueling the fire by responding to his taunts.
