Thing is, such a thread as this one provides the very attention that is being sought.

People can be complicated. The Internet has its cons in that you don't know (for sure) what a person looks like or much about them at all. But you have to take advantage of the pros. There's no need to reply to a post right away or at all. (You can therefore choose the emotional state you are in when you reply). You do not need to click on everything or process everything.

I've been doing just fine on these boards for 15 years. If a thread looks like it's going downhill, stop following it, or maybe check in after a couple of days and see if it somehow came back to the topic or something constructive. If someone replies to you with an argument surrounded by negative personal comments, reply to the argument only. If an entire reply, in your judgement, is negative personal comments and truly no argument, then don't reply at all. It's not too hard; it just takes a bit of discipline.

Even a nasty handle can be correct about some things at times, too. Thank him if you learn something, politely offer corrections to any faulty logic you may sense (only if you're sure), and ignore everything else.

Don't ever say "I'm not responding," or fall into the realm of the personal yourself. Then there's no end. To ignore someone, it must be perfect ignorance, without verbally indicating such ignorance!
