Voltage Spikes on Septa's Route 59

Yesterday, early.
On the Septa Trackless Route 59, they cancelled the EPU temporarily as they have engineers riding around in the coaches trying to figure out the line voltage spikes problem.

At noon time. yesterday
Three engineers /mechanics are riding Coach #825
(1) Electrical Engineer
(1) Chief TT mechanic
(1) Head of Frankford shop.
They have a laptop hooked up to the inside of the compartment that is behind the driver and they are getting readings and hopefully they can see where the spikes are coming from.

So, Mr. Chuck, would you say, given the evidence, that this is an example of a situation where an electric bus is not superior to a diesel bus "every day"?

Maybe its time to say UNCLE and go with regular buses. This seems like such a waste of time and money. And get rid of those ugly wires. Just my 2 cents.

I really can't answer that question. Vancouver BC, has a similar trackless model and I don't think they have voltage spike problem. This issue seems to be only in Philadelphia and only on Route 59. The 66 & 75 don't have this issue and those lines run well.
I hear some griping about that SEPTA should have never purchased new TT's and just used buses, preferably hybrids on the 3 TT lines. The story was it was all tied in with the Frankford Transportation Center rebuild. The feds gave them the money only if they restored the TT lines. (We still had the wires and substations).

I ride the Trackless about once a week and when they are running well, they are fine.
They are quiet, and have good acceleration. I also enjoy riding hybrid buses, they are much quieter than straight diesel bus.

So, i can't answer your question, I don't really have a favorite or enough facts to rate one mode over another.

I was trying to mock Dan Lawrence, who's been on an "electric beats diesel every day" kick. this failure is case in point they are by no means perfect.

I heard there were 6 Hot coaches on the Route 66 around Comly St. Now the 66 is in partial EPU mode.
That means the problem is on all three lines, and Septa is actually operating an unsafe vehicle for the public. The EPU motors are being over-used and are headed for possible failure Why can't we just run buses on the lines until the voltage issue is resolved?

Update:
Water is pouring down the cable manholes on the trackless lines, and shorting out the negative cables , so they have to go up and down the line , pumping the water out.
They are doing the 59 and will do the 66 next.
This may be the crux of the Voltage Spike problem??

Septa invested a lot of $$$ in these Trackless Coaches.I also heard the story that it was tied in with The Frankford Swing project, like we'll help you but because you have all the infrastructure still there for the the trackless lines, you must buy new vehicles and run them.

I personally like the trackless trolleys , they are clean and green like they say today.

It's disheartening to follow all these latest problems.

The 59 has been running for 3 days without HOT COACH indications.They replaced several lengths of negative cable that was worn and frayed. They still have to pump water out of the manholes up and down the line, my best guess is that will happen in the spring.I am crossing all my fingers and toes that this will solve the problem.
