I really can't answer that question. Vancouver BC, has a similar trackless model and I don't think they have voltage spike problem. This issue seems to be only in Philadelphia and only on Route 59. The 66 & 75 don't have this issue and those lines run well.
I hear some griping about that SEPTA should have never purchased new TT's and just used buses, preferably hybrids on the 3 TT lines. The story was it was all tied in with the Frankford Transportation Center rebuild. The feds gave them the money only if they restored the TT lines. (We still had the wires and substations).

I ride the Trackless about once a week and when they are running well, they are fine.
They are quiet, and have good acceleration. I also enjoy riding hybrid buses, they are much quieter than straight diesel bus.

So, i can't answer your question, I don't really have a favorite or enough facts to rate one mode over another.
