You'll be very lucky to catch some Orion Vs since they are on their last wheels. Check out the various New Flyer models; C40-LF, C40-LFR, DE40-LF, D40LFR, BRT DE42LF, BRT DE37LF, BRT DE62LF and of course Xcelsiors 40 foot Hybrids with BAE & Allison propulsion. At Union Station you'll catch some 30 ft Orion 7 CNG 1st Gen and quite possibly a 30 ft Orion 7 3rd Gen hybrid or diesel.Let's see, you also have Neoplan AN60 artic standard floor buses, NABI BRT 60 CNG artics, brand spanking *new NABI BRT 42LF Hybrids and 40 foot Orion 7 CNG 1st Gen models roaming. WMATA bus fleet is a mixture of Hybrid-Electric and CNG with very little Diesel Orion Vs and O7s 3rd gen diesels and Neoplan AN60 artic standard floors as fore mentioned. I don't have specific locations to where you spot the variety of buses...you know, why not try Silver Spring Station. That's one busy hub with WMATA buses, Ride-On buses and Prince George Buses. The CBD( Central Business District) is always a good area for buses. The Alexander city where the Pentagon is at are mostly CNG Orions roaming if I'm not mistaken. Don't be surprise if you catch Maryland's(Baltimore) commuter MCI buses roaming around over the weekend, but I don't their schedule for sure. Oh, by the way all their Xcelsiors and New Flyer D40LFRs have rear windows. Have fun and enjoy your trip in D.C. I too must make a point to visit D.C.sometime in the spring or summer |

Be sure to buy a SMARTRIP card. http://www.wmata.com/fares/smartrip/The system is expensive, more so than New York. You can travel the same distance in Virginia and Maryland and the fare will be DIFFERENT. |

I know it's relatively long distance for them to NY but they shipped on the 13th. If I don't see it Tuesday I'll start getting nervous even though I have another week before I go down there.Once it comes, I'll find it very cool that I can hop off Amtrak and on to the Metrorail without stopping! |

When I lived in Washington, it cost $10; $5 for the card and $5 value. If you're going to do a lot of riding, I suggest you add value to the card before using it so you're not stranded. WMATA used to allow negative balances on the card on the assumption the card would be refilled. When I moved out of the area, I think they changed their policy NOT to allow negative balances. |

Also, there are quite a few Orion Vs assigned to Northern Division that are out and about in the peak hours, if you wait at a bus stop along 16th Street in rush hour I'd say there are decent odds you'll get one. Or a Neoplan artic, which are also getting to be quite old. Silver Spring may be a good place to stumble on an Orion, too, especially if you want to find one of the remaining 1997 Orion Vs. |

When I lived in Washington, Landover Division was used as a storage area for OOS buses, like Eastchester Depot. You can take pictures on the Orange Line. Amtrak parallels the Orange line from New Carrollton to Landover. The Orange Line crosses over the former Conrail freight line and then parallels it until it crosses over it for D&G Junction, where the line merges with the Blue Line. |

Not sure if anyone answered the last part of your question, but WMATA's buses use the Clever Devices stop announcements. I can't speak to any other the other systems (ART, DASH, RideOn, PG's "DUH Bus" etc.). |

I appreciate the advice regarding the Orion Vs but being from NY I was more looking for things I wouldn't find in NY, so I was happy to get on a NABI 60-BRT on the X2, the first bus I've ever been on that had a door chime for the back door when closing (similar to the subway). I got on plenty of 6400s (New Flyer DE42LFAs) and an XDE40 too. It was a little frustrating to see the DC Streetcar all ready to go but not running for passengers, but otherwise a good overnight. The Circulator bus system is convenient too. The app I had for WMATA gave relatively accurate countdown clock and routing information making it easy to get around and find things. I'll probably go back to Washington if/when the streetcar is running and the Silver Line (very nice by the way) is done out to Dulles. |
