The M5, M6, M10 and M20

At one time, the M10 went from West 159 Street to Battery Park City. But planners thought that's too long a run. Let's cut it in half and create the M20. That will also give us both buses in Midtown between West 66 St., where the M20 terminates, and Penn Station, where the M10 used to terminate. But that is no longer true, as the M10 terminates at Columbus Circle now.

At one time there was an M6 bus running between Central Park South and South Ferry. But then planners said the MTA can save money by combining it with the M5. So today the M5 travels from the GW Bridge/West 178 Street to South Ferry, an even longer ride than the M10 used to travel.

Did that make any sense? And how is this working out now?

IAWTP! The M10/20 should be restored to its overlap pattern between 66th Street and Penn Station. Makes both more useful and ends an inconvenient transfer at 59th Street for those who use both.

As far as the M5 is concerned the comment is correct - it's a ridiculously long route, longest in Manhattan. Don't have statistics on its reliability.

Would make more sense to send the M7 south from 14th Street on the old M6 route. It's still a long route, north terminal 147th Street, about 1 and 1/2 miles shorter than the M5.

I would keep the M5 as it is, and then combine it with the Bx7 for a local ride from Riverdale to South Ferry.

:)

The M6 was discontinued since the DOT converted parts of Broadway to pedestrian plazas.

I stand corrected. It was rerouted around them until the budget apocalypse.

As a certain Ralph the bus driver said, "har har hardy har har!

Seriously, almost sounds like a good idea but one problem is that Bx7 frequencies don't match the M5 at certain times. Would certainly be the longest transit bus route in NYC in terms of route length and probably travel time as well. Could easily be 2 1/2 hours for one trip, and that would create problems in terms of relief stops and reliability.

One direction. (Actually, probably even more than that. The Bx7 is a good hour, and the M5 is over 2 hours, so the combined route would be around 3 hours, assuming relatively normal traffic).

I don't remember the M10 going to Battery Park. I have a MABSTOA book that lists the southern M10 roll sign destinations:
10 to CORTLANDT ST
10 TO CANAL ST
10 TO WEST HOUSTON ST
10 TO ABINGDON SQ
10 TO 32 ST

According to the published timetable, M5 trips range from 110 - 122 minutes in length, even if limited stops. So combining with BX7 is just too long a route.

And let's remember, the two former Broadway routes only used Broadway to go southbound. Going uptown, the M6 used Sixth Avenue and the M7 still does. So even though Broadway is a pedestrian plaza now, those riders still exist. They just have to walk to Fifth or Seventh Avenue to get a downtown bus, now.
