Prevost X3-45 #2491 new license plate:

Gary Horowitz via Facebook

Almost all of Bee-Line buses are receiving new plates like 2491's plate style. "County of Westchester" 2 Letters and 4 numbers, on the bottom: WESTCHESTER.

Any reason why they are doing this?

New York State "Official" vehicle license plates are already in the R series. Something needed to be done before they ran out of letters.

What happens if that bus gets transferred to another depot in another borough, does the plates change to reflect where the bus is assigned to? Or perhaps Bronx relects where Zerega is? Just throwing out questions.

I'd say just start over, but that would mean not introducing these (and the newly anounced, by Andy boy red, free of charge) First responder plates. We got the money, no worries, right! BTW all MTA buses will say Bronx as the registrations is addressed to Zerega.

It was answered earlier in this thread. Personally, I don't understand why they're given NYC tags considering MTA is a state agency.

IMO NYCT would say "METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY" then "CITY OF NEW YORK" MTABus would say "DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION" then "CITY OF NEW YORK" I mean all FDNY vehicles should technically say "BROOKLYN" as they are, unless register at Randalls Is. are out of Livingston Street IIRC.

An idea might be to remove the requirement that MTA owned-and-operated buses have license plates, or have the license plate be MTA and the bus number.

or have the license plate be MTA and the bus number.

Kinda like what's done in Hawaii.

Then again, three letters and four digits is essentially the same format that's issued to private vehicles. Sure, they're only in the G series at this point, but they will eventually get to M.

A variation would be BUS/OFFICIAL plates with a total of eight characters (e.g. MTAB1234 for bus 1234, or MTASV456 for service vehicle 456). The first three characters would be a representation of the agency's name. This would be followed by the vehicle number.

Or like Boston, "T1234". The MTA logo then bus number.

Whole thing seems pointless to me. The 'official' plates were good enough. I guess the new plates will keep the boys busy up in Auburn Prison.

If New York is planning to "screen" their tags as other states, such as Texas, Nebraska and a few others, are, then that work is likely outsourced to a third party instead of done at the prisons.

Yeah, I think you're right. NJ is doing that now, I started seeing them begining this month. The NJ ones looked so fake I took a picture of one on my phone to show my brother. Also these new NY plates are not pressed they are screen printed (got to cop-a-feel) yesterday. They are almost like a sticker on a flat metal plate.

It looks like they're trying to redo all official plates along the lines of the first responder format but I suspect that it's going to take some time (if ever) for rhyme or reason to display itself.

We've got NYS Labor cars with the agency name on new gold non-emergency plates similar to the NYS DOT example, but ALBA, WEST or NEWY in the upper right hand corner which corresponds to where the vehicles are assigned. Maybe instead of centralizing the registrations in Albany the agency registers them where they're assigned, I don't know.

I've seen Mount Vernon, White Plains and I believe Elmsford PD using unmarked cars with the OFFICIAL R-123456 plates. It will be interesting to see what the plates for those unmarked police traffic enforcement cars look like in the new plate format. Also interesting to see what and if NYC vehicles are classified first responder and the layout of those plates. I'm thinking of DEP, DOT and Sanitation here.

Most police departments in Pennsylvania simply use standard "civilian" tags for unmarked patrol cars, but other agencies use the "MG-nnnnA" Municipal tag series. That said, I don't know why New York police agencies does simply use standard passenger tags for their unmarked cars.

As a follow up, this article, posted in April on the TWC News (Upstate NY) web site might shed some light on the rationale behind the new Emergency Management tags.

We do, but it depends on the the law enforcement agency type. TLC enforcement uses offical tags, but NYPD usesregular PAS tags on unmarked vehcles. The vehicle maybe law enforcement, but not police. Hence offical tags. In NY marked police cars & fire trucks are not required to have actual tags. The plate may simply say police, sheriff or the car #.

Yes, I read it. However why change the whole offical plate system. The way it is as newly setup, I see many misnomers. NYC especially, all NYCT & MTA buses listed as Bronx. Parks Dept. as New York, etc...

It's not a misnomer. If all the buses are registered in the Bronx, then it's 100% correct.
