Question About Dollar Van Operations

I have a question: I'm doing a report for class regarding Caribbean business practices, and one of the topics I wanted to focus on was dollar vans.

A couple of questions:
* From what I've read, it looks like the drivers either use their own vans, or rent one from a dollar van operator, and then they set their own schedule as to when they want to take their breaks, and keep all the money they earn while driving.

* Apparently, they pay the operator an initial fee, and rent a TLC permit from the operator for the day (http://www.gothamgazette.com/index.php/civil-rights/576-the-citys-new-dollar-menu-for-bus-riders). Can anybody tell me a little bit more about this? (What steps does the operator have to take to make sure the permit is going into the right hands, and being used properly)

* Does anybody have a list of (Caribbean-run) routes in the city? Here's what I have so far (mostly gathered from here: http://www.straphangers.org/diaries/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=227565):

* Flatbush Avenue (Cadman Plaza to Kings Plaza)
* Utica Avenue (Eastern Parkway to Kings Plaza)
* Jamaica-Far Rockaway (Does anybody know if they're covering the Q113 LTD or local? I would assume the limited, since it's faster and likely more profitable, but I want to be sure)
* Jamaica-Green Acres (via Q5)
* Remsen Avenue (I'm not sure, but I assume they parallel the entire B17 route, unless Seaview strictly means Remsen/Seaview)

I've also read about dollar cabs (meaning, regular cars rather than vans), running along Church Avenue between East 18th & East 98th. And some starting at Nostrand/Flatbush going east along Glenwood (I'm not sure where to, though)

And does anybody know anything about the ones in The Bronx? I've heard there are a lot of them by the Dyre Avenue station, and the 238th/241st stations on the 2. Somebody mentioned that the ones by 238th/241st go into Yonkers (and Mount Vernon as well, I'm assuming), but I would think that they serve other parts of the NE Bronx as well. Also, are there any that run down Gun Hill Road?

I know there's one that runs the Q22 down in Rockaway, or similar to it at least.

It definitely goes further west because I catch the bus at B97th and that's where I see them.

Thanks a lot.

I found out about vans that cover the Q4 route, and somebody mentioned vans that do Far Rockaway-Green Acres.

Does anybody know if there's any vans between Jamaica & Downtown Brooklyn? This article (http://nypost.com/1999/04/28/city-oks-big-boost-in-dollar-van-fleet/) says there are, but I can't picture it, because Atlantic Avenue has a lot of desolate stretches, and Jamaica Avenue & Fulton Street are too close to the subway lines.

No Vans don't go from Far Rockaway to Green Acres...
It's Far Rockaway to Jamaica
Jamaica to Green Acres aka Q5 ( is what it's called)
Jamaica to Rosedale aka (Rochdale Rosedale Guy Brewer is what it's called)
Jamaica to Cambria Heights aka Linden or Q4 (is what it's called)
There's even some vans that go up Murdock (Q83 route)

Cool, thanks.

Do you know if the Far Rockaway-Jamaica vans travel via the Q113 local, limited, or both?

Unrelated to my report, I found a link to something about Chinese vans from Sunset Park to Staten Island (http://news.yahoo.com/cb-10-approves-commuter-van-sunset-park-bay-20110324-093900-564.html) Does anybody know anything about those?

The Far Rockaway vans have there own route to Rockaway.... Down Guy Brewer Blvd to Rockaway Blvd down Rockaway Blvd into 5 towns turns onto Burnside Av.. Which turns into Sheridan Blvd once it crosses Doughty Blvd (that's all Inwood) and Sheridan Blvd eventually turns into Beach Channel Drive
Beach Channel Drive to Mott Ave Far Rockaway

When Jamaica Bus ran the Q113Ltd... It followed this same route except it turned off at Nassau Expwy and Burnside Ave

Ah, that makes sense (covering the northern part of Inwood unserved by the Q113 local). Thanks a lot.

If anybody has any more info about the Brooklyn & Bronx routes mentioned (the Glenwood ones, Remsen ones, Avenue D ones, and the ones in the NE Bronx), please share. Thanks everyone!

I had no clue about the Chinese vans from Sunset Park to Staten Island (didn't even know there was a sizeable Chinese community on SI), but I do know that there are Chinese vans running Sunset Park-Chinatown and Flushing-Chinatown, and possibly some running Flushing-Sunset Park

That's what's baffling me too. There's some Chinese in areas like Concord, Willowbrook & New Springville, but definitely not anything like Chinatown or Sunset Park. I would think that they'd run to Bensonhurst or Homecrest before they'd go out to Staten Island.

I have seen some type of van service from the Grasmere section, but they go to Manhattan Chinatown.

Majority of the Chinese use S79 or S53 connect to B70 or the R train for Brooklyn Chinatowns.

Well, the fact that we have any type of commuter van service out here is news to me. I was reading some Google Book that mentioned commuter van service from Staten Island to Manhattan, and I look for more info, and I find out about one going from Sunset Park to Staten Island.

It would be nice if these options were better-publicized. They'd come in handy for non-Chinese looking to quicken/simplify their commute. (I mean, a direct ride to Brooklyn's Chinatown makes it easier to connect to the N, not to mention opening up easier access to a whole swath of central Brooklyn).

They like keeping the service for themselves. I get strange looks and a few questions any time I get on the van from Flushing to Chinatown

There is another aspect you need to look at. When I wrote my report back in 1975 when these cars first started to compete with bus routes, I was told that people from the Carribean favored vans and cars over buses because back home it was considered a status symbol to ride in a car or smaller vehicle over a full sized bus. Buses were only for the masses. I don't know how Asians feel about that.

I believe Hong Kong has its own variant of jitneys called public light buses, which seem more organized.

They are organized and have their own routes. Some are franchised routes. Mostly traveled along the double decker routes to major hubs and have lower fares. Some have bus stop signs. Most of the time they hail to the bus to get the ride. Plus all buses are govern speed and post the speed meter infront of passenger's view; required by the law. 16 pax is the max.

Toyota Coaster.

One more quick question: The Murdock vans go all the way down to the end of the Q83, right? (They don't end at Springfield or anything?)
