Re: Commuters want B44 stops restored to new SBS route (Avenue L stop) |

It applies to a small percentage of users, but that is not the point. No one should have to pay double fare because of a service change. If it is a large number like in the thousands, the MTA plays the percentage game saying its only 5% of the passengers so it's not a problem. They will ignore the raw number. Similarly, when a number is small like 6, and they want to make it sound big, they say 20% instead to make it sound huge. They are constantly playing games with numbers. They always quote operating costs in annual numbers so it's in the many thousands, so it sounds like they can't afford it when you might be speaking of $10 extra per trip which could be paid for by four new fares. In MTA lingo, anything over a thousand is a big number and anything smaller is miniscule. You should never use percentages without raw numbers. Remember 1 is 50% of 2 and 100% of nothing is still nothing. |

As far as I can tell the only time the claimed to consider revenue in their planning of new or changed routes was for the route they rerouted for the Aqueduct Racino. And I don't even believe them there because the amout of revenue they predicted tey would get just happened to be the exact amount they needed. There was no analyses done as to how many riders were inconvenienced by that change by having 5 minutes added to thir trip. That has a dollar figure attached to it ion terms of time wasted by those riders. They once rejected a proposal I made to them solely by saying it would cost $50,000 extra per year. If that were the case I figured that two new fares per bus would pay for that. Although it made te route accessible to hundreds of houses, the MTA assumed no additional passengers. Further, even without added revenue, it was a cost neutral proposal because it added zero time to the route, but it was a quarter mile longer. They considered the extra distance but ignored the fact that the time stayed the same. Bottom line. If they thought of it, it is a good idea. If you thought of it, they can't do it. |

Now that I think of it, my proposal wasn't even a quarter mile longer. They measured the existing route wrong by failing to consider the turn around between the last and first stop. I am talking about the B42. |

People have to see things happen. Notifications are not sufficient. People have to stand at the bus stop and see the plan in action, namely huge buses passing them by, before they consider taking action.Maybe instead of or in addition to notifications, MTA should prepare people for changes by doing rehearsal days of the new service. If even one weekday of a rehearsal was done for this, I wonder if the reactions would have stopped the proposal right in its tracks. |

Most people have no connections with their community boards and not everyone is on the Internet. They needed more notices on the buses for at least 30 days in advance which they didn't do. All they did was to announce the start date on all the buses a few days before. There are a lot of intracacies involved like removal of stops and prepayment and that the local would no longer go to Williamsburg Plaza. None of that was publicized widely. Also someone tell me why the machines are not located near the bus shelters and where the buses stop to make it obvious you have to pre pay? |
