I don't get the appeal behind this route. The B65 is only two blocks away and in Sunset Park there are no residences west of 3rd, so the only people inconvenienced are the people living between 3rd and 4th. North of Hamilton, there are residences west of Third and closer to 3rd than to Smith, but how many can that be? As for the need to make transfers, people should complain that much about such a minor inconvenience on a subsidized bus trip.The Montague Tunnel closure is a canard because the subway is only one block away and the split R train will run as far as the B37 used to. |

I wonder if these three tweaks could have saved the B37 in the first place.1. Run the B37 via 2 Avenue between 65 Street and 39 Street instead of 3 Avenue. This would have the B37 serve Lutheran Hospital directly, and provide a direct connection to the hospital from Bay Ridge. 2. Between 39 Street and 36 Street, route the B37 to 4 Avenue to have it serve the 36 Street (D)(N)(R) station to provide a subway connection there---the old B37 had no direct subway connection outside of Downtown Brooklyn. 3. Reroute the southern end of the B37 to serve the 95 Street (R) station, and have its terminus at the VA Hospital, where the B70 currently terminates, allowing a further direct connection to SUNY Downstate - Bay Ridge (the former Victory Memorial Hospital). Buses would cross from 3 to 4 Avenue using Marine Avenue. The B70 would then return to its pre-2010 routing. Sometimes, it's a tweak that is necessary. |

I'm too lazy to look for the multiple times I've posted my proposed B37 routing, but it would be a B103-style limited, making all old B37 stops from 95th St to Bay Ridge Ave along 3rd Ave, then next stop Lutheran Hospital, then 39 St / 3rd (or somewhere else that is convenient for connections to the B35 and the subway), then either via tunnel to Lower Manhattan or 9 St / 3rd, Atlantic / 3rd, and Downtown Bklyn.If it is to come from VA Hospital, then it would NOT go out of its way to serve Fort Hamilton (Shore Road / 4 Ave) the way the B70 does today. It would just cut across 92nd St and head north on 3rd. The B70 should then be short-turned, however, running along 8 Ave until around 86 St, then ending around the shopping area. No need for both the B37 and B70 at VA. |

If the 4th Av stations all where ADA compliant there wouldn't be much of a need for the B37. For the elderly and disabled its a long walk to the 5th Av B63. Two long blocks AND both blocks are up an I would say moderately steep hills. With the cost of making all the 4th Av stops ADA compliant it would be cheaper to just reenstate the B37 for limited hrs IMO. |

The mass rally represents a milestone in the coalition’s three-year efforts to unite the communities of Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Gowanus, Red Hook, Sunset Park, and Bay Ridge in support of restoring the bus line. "I am 77 year old activist who uses a walker. I have always used mass transit to live my life and that is what MTA has taken away," said Violeta Maya, Sunset Park community activist since 1949, and co-founder of the Restore the B37 Bus Coalition. "The MTA must restore this bus line for me and the people in our community that use it to get to work, health services, school and places of worship." In 2010, the B37 was one of five local bus lines that were reduced or eliminated in Southwest Brooklyn, resulting in $2.8 million total savings for the MTA. While every service reduction negatively affected our communities, the loss of the B37 has been particularly harsh, disproportionately impacting the elderly, disabled, families, youth, and persons with chronic illnesses, who relied on the bus to access their health services, and to travel to city agencies in downtown Brooklyn. "As a founding member of the coalition, we see this as a community health issue, the B37 bus provided patients access to their physicians," said Larry K. McReynolds, LFHC executive director. "Many of the most severely impacted are senior citizens, people with disabilities, and those that can't afford car service for medical appointments. We'd like to see this critical transportation route restored as soon as possible." "The B37 Bus coalition was founded by people using the B37 line. It is a transportation justice priority," said Elizabeth Yeampierre, Executive Director of UPROSE. "Our elders, our children, our families deserve to have access to mass transit. Using a fraction of the MTA budget to restore mass transit service in a low income community of color like Sunset Park and address climate change is not a lot to ask.
