I'm not sure a bus on 65th street would work as the B9 does well o 60th Street. I can see X28 service returning EVENTUALLY(The X27 is comning back on weekends) but B37..maye wkdy rush hours only and that's it. Is the B70 working well on 3rd Avenue anyway?p.s.The B1 should be extended to 3rd Avenue for connection with the B70 and less congestion with the S79SBS. Having the B1 layover on 87th Street won't work. B68-#818-Flyer |

I was thinking, should the B16 and the B1 swap western terminals (B1 to Shore/Fourth, B16 to Fourth/86th)? I don't even know what made me think of the idea, but it would be interesting to see the B1 transverse all of 86th Street to better serve those living west of Fourth Avenue. |

Money. The B1 is of a higher frequency than the B16. To make your proposed swap would negate the cost benefit from the B1-B64 swap from a couple of years ago. |

This is true, but then congestion would not be spared at 4th Ave, so it comes out about even. I think you had an idea to send one of the buses that end at Xaverian (71st and 4th) all the way down Shore instead. The best would probably be the B9.I would think Shore Road residents would want access to "Downtown" Bay Ridge, 86th Street, so it would have to be either the B16 or some B1s. Whichever is chosen, I guess the same amount of buses will be laying over at the 4th Ave / 87 St area. |

If the B9 is sent down Shore Road, the B16 should be truncated to Fort Hamilton High School---and run-ons and run-offs should be from this end instead of the Prospect Park end. |

There is also the possibility of sending the S53 to 59th Street instead of 86th Street and terminating there. That was also suggested back in 1978. I don't think the running time would be much more and there woud be a connection with the express and fewer buses terminating at 86th Street. |

If they were to put that into effect I'd support it. Heading to 59th Street/Fourth Avenue, the S53 (and maybe even the S79) could operate via Dahlgreen Place, 86th Street, Fourth Avenue, 59th Street and terminate at the corner. Buses could turn around via 59th Street, Third Avenue, 58th Street and back onto Fourth Avenue and then layover between 59th and 60th Streets and also pick up at that location.Thoughts? |

I don't think the buses even need to go up 4th Avenue. Just get back on the BQE after 86th Street and go right to 59th Street. They would've already made connections with the buses they need to (B70, B1, B16). Maybe if need be, buses can use Fort Hamilton Parkway between 92nd Street & 86th Street instead of the service road, so it's a little easier for Bay Ridge residents to access (and easier for B16 riders to transfer) |

That doesn't sound too shabby. Besides, the S53 and S79 would be stealing revenue from the Brooklyn buses if they were to be all local in Brooklyn along that stretch of Fourth Avenue. The only thing is, no more connection at 86th Street/Fourth Avenue to the (R) train. Then again, riders would just stay on the S53/S79 to 59th Street/Fourth Avenue where they can take either the (N) or (R) train, opening options for either a local or express train Ridership at 86th street would suffer as a result. So your idea is to have the S53 and S79 take this pattern: Dahlgreen Place (stops at 92nd, 90th/88th, 86th) back on the highway...and what exit would it take to get to 59th Street? I'd use the 65th Street exit and then go underneath the Gowanus until Fourth Avenue where it can make the drop offs and pickups at 59/Fourth like I stated in my other post. |

However, the other issue is direct service to the 86th Street shopping district. Rerouting it away from 86 Street deprives customers of that, and would put too much burden on the B1 at its first few stops. |

Well, it's all going to the MTA, so it's no big deal whether the MetroCard is dipped on an SI bus or Brooklyn bus. My real concern was that the buses would slow down too much. The B63 takes 16 minutes to get from 60th Street to 86th Street, whereas the (R) takes 6 minutes. 4th Avenue is wider, so it might be a little faster, but the point is that if you make it too slow, people might just chance it and wait for the (R), which defeats the purpose of the extension in the first place. By using the expressway, you're basically guaranteeing that the ride would be as fast as a best-case scenario where the (R) links right up with the (N) at 59th Street. I mean, I can't picture that part of the BQE getting too bad. I think a lot of the problems start north of 65th Street with the merge with the Belt and everything.I mean, there really wouldn't be a point in running up 4th Avenue. They're already covered with the B70 & B63. I mean, yeah, you might get a few SI riders going to say, 77th Street who benefit from the direct ride, but those riders are in the minority. For the shopping district along 86th Street, that's why my compromise was having it run along Fort Hamilton Parkway, so riders headed for that area wouldn't have to cross over the BQE. So buses would get off at 92nd Street, make a left, stop at the current first stop, then make a right onto FHP, right onto 86th, stop with the B1 at 86th & FHP, and then go back onto the BQE, get off at 65th Street, and terminate at 59th & 4th. Going back, I think you could keep it on Gatling Place, since it's still on the same side of the BQE, and there's no point in adding the extra turns in and slowing everything down. The distance from FHP to 4th Avenue is 4-6 minutes walking (Add an extra minute to Gatling Place). Unfortunately, it sucks if you're carrying bags, but I don't think a whole lot of the people there are shoppers. It basically makes the same connections, though, which would be the main idea with this plan. |

And for the people coming from 4th Avenue, I just figured I'd throw in that the B1 & B16 when put together are pretty frequent (the B1 by itself is frequent), so that might be another option to get to the S53/79/93. |

Hence the reason why I'd have the S53/79/93 just travel along 86th Street and then via Fourth Avenue to 59th Street, as I stated in my original idea (which I'm still more in support of than checkmate's idea). I fear that buses may get caught in traffic along the Gowanus. With Fourth Avenue being a highway in its own aspect, buses can avoid any traffic it may get caught in on the Gowanus. Then such an extension would render unreliable if the buses get caught in a situation on the highway and there's no way of getting off. |

I'm starting to think a little differently now. Adam's right...you will be taking away riders from 86th Street and putting them onto the B1 and B16, just two bus lines versus four or five depending on the time of the day. And with the B16 somewhat of an "unreliable" line (I speak from experience), then people will just rush for the bus they see first, the B1, which is already bursting at the seams as it is.I feel that since the Staten Island buses already have Bus Time, then passengers can better predict when the S53/79/93 would arrive along Fourth Avenue by tracking any of the bus lines compared to the (R) train, which relies on solely the schedule. |

The B1 as an 86 Street crosstown, however, has become hammered. That is the problem...and why you can't have a route from Staten Island to Brooklyn that misses the 86 Street shopping district. |

Many Staten Islanders use the S53 & S79 to reach the 86 Street shopping district. Can't eliminate that portion of the S53 & S79 routes. Before the S79 the MTA proposed extending the B70 into Staten Island via Hylan Blvd, terminating it in New Dorp on Ebbitts Street where the S57 terminates today. There were other SI-Brooklyn proposals too. |

I guess the bus route would be covering too much within their division. If the B70 were just extended to somewhere like Sand Lane in South Beach, that would probably be more of a reasonable extension in their eyes compared to New Dorp, which they could cover themselves. That's how I see it. |
