PHOTO: Egged Bus with American Flags (and a few others)

There were major bus changes in Jerusalem as of this morning, including some major reroutings and cancellations of routes, so I got a few photos of buses displaying numbers in places that they won't be seen anymore (or at all) yesterday. And I just happened to get a photo of a bus I've seen running around over the past few weeks or so with AMERICAN flags attached to the side mirrors. Sometimes, the buses get Israeli flags put there, especially around Israeli Independence Day (usually in early May), but this is the first time I've seen the flag for any other country on an Egged bus.

(This bus is relatively undecorated these days, I took this photo of it on May 14, 2010, and it looked like that until a few months ago.)

Here are some other photos from yesterday:

Nice pics! Love the hills in the background of the 2nd photo. Do the route display signs display their destinations in english as well? Or strictly one language?

Nice photos. In the first photo, is that tape at the bottom of the bus?

Sure looks like it. Nothing compared to its previous decoration though, I provided a link in the OP to that photo.

Do you know of any country where the bus destination signs are bilingual? English isn't even an official language of the State of Israel.

Well... I can't name a country... HOWEVER in Hong Kong they do display their Routes in both Cantonese and English :)

You could've also said no, instead of trying to be sarcastic...

I wasn't being sarcastic, I'd like someone to explain to me why Americans can't get over the fact that most international bus operators whose languages are written in non-Roman characters only make their destination signs in the "home" language. The question comes up far more often here IMO than it should.

I used to get that last artic fairly often on a different route, don't remember how it handled then. But there isn't much that causes the bus drivers here to slow down.

There is nothing wrong with that. However, the notion that Israeli transportation should make its signage in English is ludicrous. A few, select signs at critical points used by tourists are in English (i.e. the gate for the bus to Jerusalem at the Central Bus Station in Tel Aviv), but just as in other countries, things here are written in the local language. The bus stop signs have Hebrew and English on them for the most part, though the English spellings often leave a lot to be desired.

Aren't the destination signs on the light rail trilingual?

Yes, they are. However, in my travels, I find that subways/light rails/trains tend to be more "tourist friendly" than buses, so the original question still stands. The destination signs on the new Israel Railways Siemens Push-Pulls show both English and Hebrew, and the automated announcements for some (but not all) train lines are in those languages (but there are no Arabic announcements on the railway lines).
