CTA(Chicago Transit Authority) mega bus order along with 1,030 rehabbed New Flyer D40LF by 2013-2014

With CTA making historic news about its purchase of 425 buses. From the 425 bus order, 325 are 40FT low emissions clean diesel buses and the other 100 are a mix of clean diesel and hybrid-electric diesel buses. Also, rehabbing its 1,030 New Flyer D40LFs by 2013-2014. Here are my fun questions to you all.

Who do you think or should win the 40FT bus order?
Between NovaBus and New Flyer. Who do you think or should win the articulated order with some being BRT bus application for the Jeffery Corridor?

I personally would like to see Millennium Transit Services win the standard 40 ft. order with their RTS "Extreme", but in a 42.5' configuration. I like variety in a fleet. The articulated buses I believe should go to New Flyer for their Xcelsiors.

CTA says it's bids are open for those bus manufacturers that are interested. This means it doesn't have to be strictly New Flyer.... whose bus fleet are dominated by them.

It's a good day and moving forward in Chicago.

Does anybody seriously think that the CTA would consider a bid proposal from MTS for a large contract like this? First of all MTS doesn't have a completed "Extreme" demo model for them to showcase. Secondly, the CTA wants the order completed within two years. Lastly, I hear that MTS is still in financial difficulty...with the way the US and global economy is going, do you think any private investment entities want to throw more money into an all ready losing company...end of story.

Well in transit strange things have happened before, so it's not unlikely. I'll just play the waiting game and see who gets the order.

I would have to guess that the major players here would be New Flyer or NovaBus as CTA has a strained relationship with NABI and nobody else makes artics.

With no federal dollars involved, CTA could theoretically bypass 'Buy America' and go overseas if they'd like.

Interesting that you say this because it is possible actually. When TMC won the CTA contract for the first ever RTS wide front door, the very first bus had not yet been built. And MTS isn't in "financial difficulty" at all. Times aren't the best for sure, but if things were all that bad for them MTA's first bus wouldn't be on the assembly line waiting for the green light.

The difference this time around is that MTS has 2 Extreme buses at the facility that CTA can check out. A 40 footer, and a 42.5 footer.

They are flexible when it comes to these things.

I don't think so, considering these European buses are not Altoona tested. European TAs generally don't keep their buses in service for more than 7 years, so I really don't think CTA would take a risk with such models.

I don't think they would either, but you never know.
