Just heard on the radio that traffic is already backed up at Jones Beach. I wonder how bad the delays are.

Under this senario, I don't see how a 30 minute headway can be maintained.

Do you mean because of the traffic problem today or just in general?

Yeah, after hearing the traffic report and seeing that it would run 30 minutes on here, I didn't think it would work very well today.

I know that Nassau and NICE were trying to do a good thing but I don't think they should have started the n88 service the day of the Air Show.

Heavy traffic may be due to the "Blue Angels" fly by today at Jones Beach.

This package will include a round trip LIRR ticket to Freeport station and a round trip NICE BUS voucher for Jones Beach.

Would this "voucher" be a round trip Metrocard ?

Yeah it was for the Air Show, though at the time of that post, I had incorrectly said there was delays when the report had actually said that all the all the fields were full and traffic had come to a near stand still.

Memorial Day weekend is the traditional first weekend of summer - it wouldn't have looked good if NICE/Nassau ducked it because of fears about traffic.

Yeah, but is it really worth it if a bus gets stuck in stand still traffic for hours because all the parking spaces were filled, as was said to have happen today.

Newsday reported that 281,00 people crammed Jones beach for the Blue Angels air show. The event was well publicized on local radio stations to promote the show. I wonder if the water was too cold to go swimming ?

Passengers being stuck in traffic is not NICE's problem - all they can do is have enough operators and buses available to maintain the promised 30-minute headway.

Not the same scale as yesterday, but Centro in Syracuse sometimes faces similar issues with its park & ride shuttles to the New York State Fair. A popular concert combined with good weather will often bring over 100,000 patrons to the fairgrounds on a single day and overwhelm the approaches on I-690 and NYS 695. Centro promises a 20-minute headway on its most popular P&R routes and will dispatch extra buses as needed to maintain the headways and to provide the necessary capacity. Sure, people hate getting stuck on a bus in traffic but will usually understand that they would be no better off if they drove (and would have farther to walk once they arrive).
