Posted by RailBus63 on Tue May 22 09:43:20 2012 edf40wrjww2msgDetailB:detailStr fiogf49gjkf0d I was playing around with the MTA Trip Planner and got these rather elongated itineraries for a Saturday afternoon trip from Flatbush & Nostrand Aves. in Brooklyn to Rockaway Park (obviously a quick 30-minute trip on the Q35): From : Flatbush Ave & Nostrand Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11210 To : Newport Ave & Beach 116th St, Rockaway Park, NY 11694 Leaving at : 05/26/2012 01:45 PM Itinerary 1 Approx Travel Time : 38 minutes Walk 0.11 miles(2 minutes) South to AV H & NOSTRAND AVE Take the ROCKAWAY PARK B.116 ST bound Q35 Bus departing at 1:47 PM Get off at NEWPORT AVE & BEACH 116 ST at 2:21 PM Pay Per Ride Fare : $2.25 - Reduced Fare : $1.10 So far, so good. Itinerary 2 Approx Travel Time : 23 hours 37 minutes From NOSTRAND AVE & FLATBUSH AVE Take the LTD WILLIAMSBURG BRIDGE PLZ via NOSTRAND bound B44-LTD Bus departing at 2:38 PM Get off at FULTON ST & NOSTRAND AVE at 3:07 PM Pay Per Ride Fare : $2.25 - Reduced Fare : $1.10 From NOSTRAND AV STATION A/C Take the MOTT AV-FAR ROCKAWAY bound A Train departing at 3:15 PM Arrive at BROAD CHANNEL STATION A/S at 3:23 PM Transfer to the ROCKAWAY PK-BEACH 116TH ST bound S Train departing at 1:54 PM Get off at ROCKAWAY PARK - BEACH 116TH ST STA A/S at 2:12 PM Walk 0.12 miles(3 minutes) North-West to destination. Total Fare : $2.25 - Reduced Fare : $1.10 Ummm ... what? Does the Rockaway shuttle shut down on Saturday afternoon for 22 hours? But wait, there's more: Itinerary 3 Approx Travel Time : 9 hours 46 minutes From FLATBUSH AV - BROOKLYN COLLEGE STA 2/5 Take the 241ST ST-WAKEFIELD bound 2 Train departing at 2:17 PM Arrive at ATLANTIC AV STATION 2/3/4/5/B/Q/LIRR at 2:31 PM Pay Per Ride Fare : $2.25 - Reduced Fare : $1.10 Transfer to the 57TH ST - 7TH AV bound Q Train departing at 2:31 PM (service advisory) Arrive at 14TH ST - UNION SQ (UPTOWN) N/Q/R at 3:03 PM Transfer to the FOREST HILLS-71ST AV bound R Train departing at 3:12 PM Get off at GRAND AV - NEWTOWN STATION M/R at 4:04 PM From BROADWAY & QUEENS BLVD Take the ROCKAWAY PARK LIMITED bound Q53 Bus departing at 12:00 AM Get off at BEACH 116TH ST & ROCKAWAY BEACH BLVD at 12:00 AM Walk 0.14 miles(3 minutes) North to destination. Total Fare : $2.25 - Reduced Fare : $1.10 Apparently there's a time-zone change somewhere between Rego Park and the Rockaways - LOL. Whoops.

If you choosen fastest route I believe it would be all Q 35. Trip Planner is based on what option you choose, fares, transfers, and travel times. So I have to say your wrong that it failed... Myth busted !!

If you choosen fastest route I believe it would be all Q 35. It did fail because I chose 'Minimize Travel time' with all of the remaining options at the default settings. FWIW, I also chose the street intersections in this instance because I found that using the Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College 2/5 station and the Rockaway Park-Beach 116th A/C station as origin and destination points with the default modes of 'Subway', 'Bus' and 'Rail' selected seems to always provide a 90 to 100 minute journey via the B44 bus and the Fulton Ave. IND instead of the more direct and faster Q35 bus. I've discovered other instances of a longer all-rail or bus-to-rail journey recommneded when a faster and more direct local or limited bus is available.

What other options are there after that?

It can't always be a perfect match!!
