High-Speed Bus Route to Solve Detroit Transit Crisis? |

Now, local leaders are working on a new plan to address the transit crisis. It's called Rolling Rapid Transit. Could the high-speed bus route be on a fast track for Metro Detroit?A day after D-DOT's public hearing about cuts in service, filled with anger and outrage, comes news of plans for a new rapid bus system to revitalize Metro Detroit. "Busses are the answer," Oakland County Commissioner David Potts told Fox 2. "There's something called the golden triangle that starts at the foot of Woodward Avenue in Detroit, comes north into Oakland County, up Woodward Avenue, goes over toward Macomb County, back down." Potts says the new bus route would travel along Woodward and Gratiot and east-west along M-59 all the way out to Macomb County. The proposal also calls for a path to Ann Arbor, including two additional stations in Washtenaw County. Some may not like a bus system connecting the suburbs to the inner-city, but Potts says it could save the region. "Problems don't stop at city lines," Potts says. "Crime doesn't stop at any city line. If you look at this as a regional opportunity, we are all part of the same problem or solution. If you can't get your people to work, they're not gonna come here." The new system would be more high-tech than SMART bus. Like transit systems in Los Angeles, the rolling rapid would run on its own lane and communicate electronically with traffic signals. Right now, it's only a proposal. The plan is in its early stages. The price tag is already at more than $500 million. It was discussed during a workshop of the National Bus Rapid Transit Institute Friday at the Detroit Zoo. Legislation to create a Rapid Transit Authority for southeast Michigan - which would oversee and coordinate existing bus services - was introduced at the state level earlier this month. That legislation will have its second hearing on Tuesday in Detroit |

Im beginning to think can help DDOT or SMART. They have proposed new crap everytime their is a crisis for the last 50 years. Has anything changed? Nothing at all. Same old shit decade after decade. Im just happy I dont have to deal with that bullshit anymore! Worse transit systems in North America hands down!! |

They should spend some time looking at MTA or NJT. While neither is perfect by any means, they both operate bus and rail services in an expansive area. You have these multi-modal operators running right next to each other to observe and learn from. While heavy rail for the Detroit area isn't a viable option, MTA and NJT both operate local and express bus service in, around and through major urban areas, just what Detroit needs. |

They should spend some time maintaining their buses. NJT's strongest asset is their bus maintenance. They run those MCIs as hard as their private counterparts. |

I don't think that as long as the city of Detroit runs DDOT that you'll see much if any improvement to service or maintenance. Everything in Detroit is run the same way. But what works at one dept doesn't always work at another. Vehicle maintenance, although critical to all city owned vehicles, needs to be prioritized in certain departments, like DDOT and EMS. |

It's not a viable option now because the start up costs would be prohibitive for the operators, regardless of who the operators would be.. There was a proposal for a light rail to travel up Woodward Ave from downtown to Eight Mile, a distance of eight miles, but it was voted down recently. They assumed it would cost a half billion dollars to start up, and even with private donations it was still too costly to fund with public money. |
