It's not a viable option now because the start up costs would be prohibitive for the operators, regardless of who the operators would be.. There was a proposal for a light rail to travel up Woodward Ave from downtown to Eight Mile, a distance of eight miles, but it was voted down recently. They assumed it would cost a half billion dollars to start up, and even with private donations it was still too costly to fund with public money.
