I will put my response here because I have no intentions of replying to Terrapin. How can he talk about logic when he doesn't even know the meaning of the word?Ever try having a discussion with him? He just goes around in circles. That is his logic. He was arguing me that it was perfectly logical for him to say I was wrong about something after admitting he never read what I said in the first place. Then he was arguing that because of some conditions he placed on his post it wasn't necessary that he should be required to read an article he was commenting on. Why should anyone even try to have a discussion with such an individual? He is the last one who should talk about drawing logical conclusions. He nor anyone else has ever proved any conclusion that I have come to as being illogical or wrong. They have only stated that such is the case. As I stated elsewhere, Paet 3 next Monday discusses the circumstances I left Operations Planning. On an attempt to return to Operations Planning (which was not successful because my former boss was bad mouthing me) at the interview, personally arranged by David Gunn, I explained my ideas of renumbering Manhattan bus routes so that they are the same name as the street they operate on such as renumbering the M106 to the M42. I was told that it was a dumb idea and totally unnecessary. But guess what, three weeks later all the crosstown routes were renumbered exactly as I suggested. So they stole my idea and didn't give me the job or credit for it. In 2001 I recommended extending the B83 along the Belt Parkway to Gateway Mall. They rejected that one too. They said they weren't allowed to operate buses on the Belt Parkway. I had to tell them that they could once they received a permit from DOT which they didn't even know they our do. Then they go and study this one mile extension for five years before implementing it exactly as I recommended. So if you want to call it sour grapes, go ahead. But everything I say is the truth. I finally retired because I had the age and wasn't enjoying what I was doing which had not been planning for over 20 years. As far as my beef with the MTA, it is solely with Operations Planning, not any of the other departments. They are the only ones who ignore my emails. I get responses and personal meetings with Superintendents and dispatchers whenever I have a problem. Can anyone else here say that? They are trying their best to solve problems. Unfortunately much of what needs to be done is not under their control. It is under the domain of Operations Planning and Budget. I have often said nice things about the MTA, just not about Operations Planning. |

I also notice that when I ask you specific questions, you don't provide any answers, only accusations.Although I have formally not been in the decision making process for planning since 1982, I have been very close to it and paying close attention to any plans that interested me, made dozens of suggestions to them and received formal written replies. I have also analyzed their data finding numerous errors in what they have produced. I left e agency in 2005, but stil have contact with the MTA having had four meetings with them after I retired. So I am quite aware of what is needed in general. I only speak of specific instances where I have personal knowledge of the situation which makes me far more credible than you who can only speak in broad generalities and avoids any discussion where specifics are involved. When you called me only a "casual user" and dismissed all bus fans as know nothings in one broad brush stroke, you destroyed all your credibility. |

It may be speeding the travel of the buses which is saving the MTA money. That does not mean it is saving the passengers any time at all the two aren't the same thing. To show that the passengers are saving time from origin to destination which includes walking time, you either need to do an origin destination survey which has not been done or else make public the results of your computer modeling data which the MTA has not done.If some riders are coming from the Lexington Avenue subway you are moving them to a less efficient mode of travel, not a desirable objective and not a success. If they are being diverted from the 3rd and Lexington Avenue buses, those lines are now more inefficient unless you reduce service on them slowing travel times for riders on those routes, so that wouldn't be successful either. With the data that has been released up to this time, the only success the MTA can legitimately claim is the savings in operating costs resulting from the increase in bus speeds. Until they release substantiating data, they have no right to claim a success for the passenger. |

I can't very well ride a service that does not yet exist, the B44 SBS which is one of the routes I have been criticizing. I have not been criticizing the M15 per se other than the issue with the summonses and broken fare machines reported by the media. I have been criticizing the MTA for not providing adequate data. It is not necessary to ride the route to make that criticism.I have extensively criticized the B1 and B4 both of which I currently ride and observe. That together with my extensive experience and knowledge along with my accomplishments that no one on this board can even match is definitely not CASUAL knowledge. |

Maybe you should learn some English before you start knitpicking about the use of one word.I do ride the routes I have criticized which I have already explained elsewhere in this thread. I also explained how my being officially out of planning is not relevant. I did submit a response regarding yours and the MTA's alleging success for SBS. . I can't find it right now. It's either buried somewhere or the post somehow wasn't submitted. I will either find the link or rewrite it as best I can. I did not leave Planning out of my own accord which is fully explained in Part 3, next Monday. I retired from the MTA on my own accord. I chose not to stay longer. |

People won't include walking time to or from the bus stop ion their total trip time. They won't complain about it (at least, New Yorkers won't). That's the part of the trip that THEY control. When they have to depend on transportation services run by others, THAT'S where the time savings come into play.I doubt many of the passengers are coming from the Lexington subway; they are more likely coming from the Lexington/Third Ave buses. It does prove that the SBS service is accomplishing its goals of speeding travel times. And that's a success. |

When it comes to journalism, there is a bigger difference than the dictionary definition of an article.Articles involve research and fact checking. It requires the citing of sources. Facts are verifiable by multiple other means. It should be unbiased. An Opinion column needs little of either. It is primarily the opinion of the writer. Facts do not need multiple sources. Unless an accusation is being made, they're generally not checked at the editorial level. Opinion is ALWAYS biased to the writer's needs. Those are the basics. Your opinion columns have a consistent bias against the MTA. They also have a consistent bias against change, because you generally view it as negative. You opine that things would be better if the MTA just followed your suggestions, and your sour grapes at your suggestions to planning not being acknowledged or your ideas not being credited makes you sound like the kid in gym who was picked last for every game and was the first target in dodgeball. |

Actually I started out as a map and train person at the age of 3. I didn't develop an interest in buses until about 15, but I still cared more about trains. Actually before the New Looks, I actually hated bus vehicles themselves because of all the shaking and diesel fumes. I guess during graduate school I developed a real interest in the bus routes. I saw a great need for something to be done. I was very fortunate that I was able to act on my dream early on.Even today details about buses themselves bore me. I can't even keep track of bus models and numbers any more because it doesn't interest me. My prime interest now is how to make things better and not letting the MTA get away with BS. I don't think that qualifies me as a busfan. I did drive a bus once for 60 seconds at the second bus rodeo. It was Japanese test bus Hino 951. There is even a picture of me driving it floating around on the Internet which I saw 25 years later, but you can't see my face since a bus driver was leaning over showing me where the door control was when the photo was snapped. Probably one of you here took that picture. You were about 15 at the time in 1981. |

He labels the columns opinion when he sees fit. Why don't you take up that subject with him, since I have no control over that. I have never tried to pass them off as news articles which you keep accusing me of doing. As far a bias against the MTA is concerned, I have already explained that I've written good and bad about them. My beef is not with the MTA as you keep accusing me of. It is only with Operations Planning and Budget. I have a good rapport with Operations. They respond to my e-mails and they are doing the best they can under difficult circumstances. And yes, the MTA would be much better off if Operations Planning followed my suggestions as well as the suggestions of others instead of believing that they are the only ones capable of coming up with any good ideas. It is that stubbornness, that is causing the harm. |
