PICS: LCTA and COLTS (Part 1 - LCTA) |

Posted by The Flxible Neofan on Mon Jan 24 22:02:04 2011 In the Wyoming Valley, there are two transit systems that serve the cities and Wilkes Barre and Scranton. These are called the Luzerne County Transportation Authority and County of Lackawanna Transit System.In Luzerne County, where Wilkes Barre is located, you'll find LCTA taking care of business:   Before the Intermodal Transit Center was built, LCTA buses picked up passengers in the Public Square.    Intermodal Transit Center  The City of Pittston   Wyoming Valley Mall    Main and Oak Streets, Old Forge, PA...home of the "Pizza Capital of the World" and the famous Old Forge pizza. This is also one of two transfer points to COLTS (the other is in Pittston). Check Pt 2 of this series for more photos! |

COLTS covers the Lackawanna County end of things (but also serves Pittston, which is TECHNICALLY in Luzerne County), and primarily runs a fleet of 35 foot Gillig Phantoms.    Old Forge, PA       Besides the Phantoms (and paratransit minibuses, but we don't count those), COLTS just started running ONE Gillig Low Floor number 301. I was lucky to grab it on Wyoming Ave in Scranton, although I wasn't able to catch a ride.   Back to Pittston   Major gripe: The LCTA and COLTS buses do NOT layover in the same spot, and the following sign is outdated as the 17 was discontinued!  I hope you enjoyed this look at bus service in the Wyoming Valley. These two systems, along with Hazleton Public Transit (HPT) in Hazleton, PA, are talking about consolidating their operations to become a regional transit agency, which actually makes a LOT of sense, so these transit systems may be "history" one day. |

Cool.The photo of Boscov's reminded me of some of the lyrics of a great song, "Chapter 11 Choo Choo": "Tell me my boy, is that the Moscow Bridge a-cumblin, All over them cars, thank G-d they’re not ours. Now ain’t it a shame, we lost the Chapter 11 Choo Choo, We’ll miss the old whistle call, let’s hope we don’t lose the mall." The "mall" referred to is the Steamtown Mall. The song was written before the Mall actually got built. Here is one of the most famous COLTS bus photos IMO: Opening day of the 1989 Red Barons baseball season at the brand new Lackawanna County Multi-Purpose Stadium. I attended this game. I do not know if we parked in the lot or if we rode a COLTS bus to the stadium. I'll have to try to find out. But it looks like they had the whole bus fleet there! |

Yes, I think COLTS only has about 30 or so buses, so that's definitely the majority of the fleet. Of course, when service ends at about 6PM, with no Sunday service, it's much easier to have buses available for the major events.It's quite hard to tell what kind of buses those are in the picture. I wonder if it's mixture of the AMGs listed in the roster you linked to as well as Pennliner Neoplans. |

I need to actually make my way to those museums too, lol. What's pretty nifty is that from the food court at the Mall, you can see the trains from Steamtown in the yard. I think there's actually a bridge from the mall to the yard as well.With it being winter and all last time I was up there, going outside to that bridge probably wouldn't work so well, lol. |
