Nice job composing your photos, but they are coming out washed out. Check the settings on your camera. Is the White Balance set properly (Auto white balance would be best). Then, I would see if you can shoot in an Aperture Priority mode and go for f/5.6 or f/8 in sunny situations like this.

Bottom line - keep shooting, and play around with your camera - you're photos are getting better!

I've run into the same issues with Auto settings on my cameras. I think they are built to take people pictures and don't react well to a white bus! I prefer Shutter Priority or Aperture Priority in general, although I'll use the Manual setting for low-light situations.

OH. MY. GAWD.

The second I saw these photos, I knew almost instantly what camera had made them. It all came back to me in a flood of (unfortunate) memories.

I really really really really really really really REALLY hope that this new camera is a free warranty replacement, though I'm not sure how that can be because AFAIK it only had a 1 Year Limited Manufacturer Warranty. Maybe you had an extended warranty?

The EXIF data for these photos identifies the camera used as the Polaroid A500, first available on Amazon.com in 2006. It currently has 11 customer reviews on Amazon: 3 total four- and five-star reviews, 7 total two- and one-star reviews. The most recent review, posted about 10 months ago, and rated one star, reads as follows:
I purchased this camera as a gift for my 9-year-old daughter. When I selected the entry-level/beginner camera, it was largely based on price - $50 at Target. I studied the product packaging before buying it to determine whether I needed to purchase a memory card as well... Absolutely no indication on the outside of the package. That would be nice to know before gifting it!

She was excited to receive the gift but highly disappointed that she could not use it until we made another trip to the store.

The camera construction is light and flimsy. The control buttons are so small that they're difficult to engage. All images on the viewer were extremely blurry and the photos that we uploaded to the PC were likewise blurry. The images were so bad that we checked several times for a plastic lens cover. There is no cover to protect the lens when the device is stuffed into a pocket or bag so I see this as a long term issue (or short term issue for a child). The sole positive: it was easy to transfer photos to my PC.

I checked Polaroid's website for downloadable documentation or troubleshooting and could not quickly find anything.

Rather than trying to make lemonade, I'm taking this lemon back and moving on to another manufacturer.

If you're considering the Polaroid a500, put it back on the shelf and move on. There's a reason that this once trusted name has twice filed for bankruptcy.

My advice: buy a better camera when you can.

Ken...keep doing what you are doing if you are happy with it. And I will say this, out of the 11 photos you took, 7 of them you used proper lighting with the sun behind you, not bad. Keep shooting, can't beat up on you for trying.

That is because your photos are poor. Rather than run out and buy the cheapest camera so you can start taking pictures immediately, why not save some money and get a better camera?

Such as Canon A490

It's not much more expensive than what you did get, and it's significantly better quality. While it may lack a lot of controls that more expensive cameras have, what it does have is significantly better than what you have now.

The cheaper ones generally don't, but a brand name from a reputable digital camera manufacturer, which Polaroid clearly is not, will yield significantly better results.

For the record, I don't even think this camera is even made by what we used to know as Polaroid. The exist today mostly as a licensed name, trading on the formerly good reputation of the company to sell shitty (and even THAT'S probably an overstatement) consumer electronics.

I distinctly remember this topic being posted on this board where someone was talking about buying this crappy camera (I guess it was Mr. Morris Rider back when he was Ken S.). The reviews and pictures say it all...

Better to get a decent used one online than waste money on this camera...unless you just don't give a damn and maybe that's how NJT Morris Rider feels about the transit photography. Frankly, I'd return it if possible...but that's just me being somewhat particular with my pictures.

Anyone who wants to take pictures should care as much about them as possible; to that extent, underexposure, overexposure, a piece of garbage floating into frame just as you hit the shutter, and a number of other things that can be 'wrong' with a photo can be corrected in software. But a blurry subject isn't one of them.

Exactly and if this nastiness from a certain someone continues, my pics will only be posted to TTMG.

For the record, I don't even think this camera is even made by what we used to know as Polaroid. The exist today mostly as a licensed name, trading on the formerly good reputation of the company to sell shitty (and even THAT'S probably an overstatement) consumer electronics.

Correct: Polaroid after 2001

Who cares, he's taking pictures of BUSES for goodness sakes, a subject that would make real photo snobs recoil in horror. I didn't know this was a photography forum. I thought this was a discussion board where pictures were optional. If that's what he can afford that's what he can afford. If you don't like his pics, don't click them. Simple as that. I guess the Brian Whineberg virus is eating at some of your brains, sad. Almost as sad as the people who go to great lengths to defend the piece of trash.

But not nearly as sad as the people who go to great lengths to flood the forum with anti-Brian posts that aren't even in response to anything.

Where is this flooding of anti-Brian posts? No one mentions the tool until he derails yet another thread with his disturbing mental issues. Getting on someone for how their bus photos turn out, on THIS forum? Disgusting. This isn't a forum of professional photographers, it's a loosely knit group of foamers/buffs with the occasional employee thrown in.

As some of you always say about Whineburg, just IGNORE Ken's/Morristown's photo posts. You all should know what to expect by now. Some people just aren't going to improve past a certain level, and have no desire to, especially if it requires buying a ridiculously expensive piece of electronic equipment. $200 bucks may be nothing to some of us, but it can be alot to others.

It doesn't matter what he takes pictures of...he's posted photos of trains on the Subchat side as well. While you're right, this isn't a photography forum, many of us take our photography seriously enough that we can offer critiques and opinions on photos posted by others -solicited or not- either in praise of said photos, or to suggest, as in this case, ways to make photos better.

This particular poster has previously been given advice on his photography, and either doesn't heed it or enjoys being fodder for the resident troll, so he continues to do so.

I, like many others here, like looking at photos of subjects that interest us; even those of people who we've had numerous petty squabbles with, and offer an honest opinion on them. Usually it turns into a a simple "Here are pictures" thread where everyone posts that they think they're good (or bad) and what may be done to improve them; for the majority of posters here, this is the case.

Occasionally theses threads turn into discussions of the subject photographed, or of the history of the location; rarely they turn into full-on flame wars, based not upon the actual or perceived quality of the photos posted, but of the personal issues between certain posters who can't let past issues die.

If you're posting photos here, you're ASKING this community to look at them and offer praise or criticism. They way to answer "I don't like it" isn't with "Your photos look worse, monkey!" (or similar); but to either ignore the response, OR ask what it is about the photo that they don't like. In this person's case, it's almost universally acknowledged by the community that his photos are difficult to look at because there is either a lack of care in taking the shot (bad composition, shakiness, over/under exposure) or the shot is out of focus, some so badly that a number board, or a company name, is nearly illegible.

Instead of taking such criticism in stride, even when it's relatively mild, he resorts to anger. Further trying to explain your opinion, and attempting to defuse that anger, results in being compared unfavorably to someone he has a grudge against, and THIS starts the complete and total meltdown of this person.

Bottom line, we're all mature people here, albeit a bit childish at times (some of us more than others; many of us more often than we'd like to admit; some with intentional glee, like Heypaul (the only name I'll drop)), and much good-natured ribbing takes place over off-topic subjects like the Mets. Sometimes even the most calm and rational among us loses their cool. With limited exception, we apologize, acknowledge the error of our ways, and try our best not to repeat past mistakes. Others seem to draw great joy in repeatedly calling out others on errors or misstatements made weeks, months, years, or even over a decade ago. Obviously, this is not the path to a healthy discourse within our community, and until certain posters here realize this, we'll continue to shed members of our community who have significant information to offer, until this board becomes a place where only flamewars take place.
