Q58 limited..comning soon?? |
|
|
Posted by caine515 on Sat Mar 13 20:29:28 2010 I was on the last B13 and a driver from Fresh Pond depot got on the bus. He is a driver on the Q58. He informed me that there is a plan to implement a Q58 limited. His suggestion to improve a limited on the Q58 is to run it limited to Queens Blvd-Grand Av-right on Queens Blvd to service road to connect at 108th Street-resume route. Incentive for commuters from Main Street who don't need Corona Avenue and those that would can take the local. Please let me know if a Q58 limited is in the works for real. The problem is that the Q58 has too many twists and turns, especially along Corona Avenue. That said, during the rush, all Q58s should be limited-stop along Grand Avenue (with stops at 79 Street, 69 Street, and Hamilton Place). Additional service for local service could be provided by Q59 short-turns that begin and end at Fresh Pond Road, interlined with the B57---presuming that the resulting Carroll Gardens-Rego Park run doesn't become too long. |

When you mentioned "right on Queens Blvd. to service road to connect at 108th Street," I thought you meant the Queens Blvd. service road to 108 St., then I realized you meant the service road of the LIE (Horace Harding). This limited rerouting sounds like a good idea. |

The only street along the Q58 I can see having a successful limited service is Grand Avenue, whose Limited service should come from the Q59 in my opinion, but the Q58 is fine too. Either way the B57 should also be extended to Rego Park if the B75 isn't going to be eliminated. |

As busy as the Q58 is it won't work for the Ridgewood portion. Traffic is terrible during rush hours on Fresh Pond Road. If a Limited is done have it terminate at Fresh Pond/Metro Av. It might be doable, this route has major bunching problems. |

That said, during the rush, all Q58s should be limited-stop along Grand Avenue (with stops at 79 Street, 69 Street, and Hamilton Place).Said by somebody who doesn't live in the neighborhood? 61st Street is busy with transfers from other routes; 64th Street is heavily used, 71st Street is important due to the schools, and 84th Street always has a crowd. My stop is 61st Street. Sure I can walk north a few blocks to Hamilton Place to board, but it would be very tough on senior citizens and families. All to benefit the residents of Ridgewood? There is not enough Q59 service to fill the gaps. |

I don't think I have ever ridden this route, so my idea may not be practical. If a study was done to see where most people get on/or off, would it be feasible to run the route as follows, effectively bypassing Corona on some runs. Right at Queens Blvd, left on to LIE service road to College Point Avenue. Left at CPA to terminal. Reverse coming out of terminal. If practical in terms of capacity, might be worth a try. |

The westbound LIE service road doesn't directly connect to Queens Boulevard, so it would need to get on 57th Avenue or 62nd Drive to access it. Of course, the most direct route would be along the LIE between 99th Street and Queens Boulevard. |

The route could run as follows there: Via College Point Boulevard, a right at Roosevelt to stand behind the Q48 stop. Then, a left at Main, a left at 39, a left at College Point and return to Ridgewood.Such would also provide better service between Flushing-Main Street and a new shopping mall opening by College Point Boulevard and Roosevelt Avenue. |

The question is why it doesn't go there now? There are probably two reasons, which point to the inertia within the TA. First, the route predates the subway. The destination was to the LIRR railroad station. Even though they have made revisions to the routing in Flushing because of direction changes to one-way streets, they have never bothered to rethink the reason for the routing since 1928. Second, looping onto Main Street at 41st Ave meant they would not cross tracks with those of the NY & Queens going to Jamaica. They have yet to notice that the NY & Queens converted to buses in 1936. |
