CitySightsNY MCI double-decker...

OK, first of all, whose idea was this to create a double-decker from a motorcoach, let alone regular transit buses? A-series front, D-series back, G-series headlamps, J-series taillamps, whatever the heck, my goodness it's hideous. Then again, the full ad wrap doesn't make it any better.

Second of all, which bus was this? Could this be one of the ex-Bee-Line units? Or the ex-TOR units? Or even one of the ex-GO units?

I would believe that it is one of the ex-TOR units (the ex-GO units and ex-Bee-Line units are all 102A2s; this is a 96A2). It is the only one.

Those sightseeing buses are a racket. I don't get how the city allowed these two companies to become partners, because there's no 'competition' at all - CitySights matches the Gray Line routes and rates almost exactly. The pricing methods used by both of those sightseeing companies is worse than Disney. Individual tour rates are ridiculously expensive by design in order to convince the suckers ... er, tourists ... to spend another $15 to buy the multi-day on-off passes. Of course, once you've spent your money, you discover that the companies run the minimum number of coaches possible as you watch full bus after full bus pass you by unless you're getting on at Times Square or Battery Park.

The city has no say in who becomes partners. The city only cares and controls about the revenue they generate from the cute little sightseeing bus plates.

The sightseeing part is easy. It's the marketing that is so expensive.

Thus the reason why:

Declining revenues + Higher expenses = Operational partnership and alliance

Nobody ever said it was fair, just that it brought in money and kept them from going to operational extremes...

I never saw the point in these when I was there. A $7.50 daily Metrocard and a telephoto lens let me see almost the same stuff, yet at my own pace/discretion/etc.

I suppose most of the sights I wanted to see were actually running on the *ground,* but oh well. For a NYC n00b, I still saw plenty of the city without resorting to these rip-offs...

Okay this is not a MCI. Yes it has an MCI front and other parts but it is not a MCI. This is manufactured by specialty vehicles.

Looks like an MCI, or something else with an MCI front. I've seen this kind of a conversion done by a company called "Bus Body Works" of South Amboy NJ.

Actually, this one is an MCI. It's a 96-A2, as previously mentioned in another post. I saw this bus up close and realized that it wasn't an SBM bus by the front and even the rear engine compartment, which CLEARLY was an MCI rear engine compartment.

Allow me to clarify: the fact that this guy is using any ol' bus to convert to a double-decker to make money is a good idea, which I'm not debating; using specifically a motorcoach (let alone an MCI) for that purpose isn't a good idea, at least for aesthetical purposes. An RTS or a Flxible as a double-decker isn't a bad idea either, in terms of getting buses to make money, but aesthetically it wouldn't be very appealing.

And lay off the hyprocritical bullshit, no need for that. Like I said, legitimate or not, you made a comment about me not making the money he is making, which to be honest with you has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that I don't like the appearance of an MCI-turn-double-decker bus.

I suppose, but geez, an MCI? You couldn't just get more New Flyer LFs (which I think is a MUCH more suitable double-decker conversion than any of the high-floor buses, esp. being that most double deckers have a low-floor bottom section), it's not like there's none around...I mean, a number of agencies are retiring D40LFs, including the PANYNJ, Valley Metro, OCTA, and RIOC.
