Those type of headlines can go both ways. You could have your example or TA SPENDS $XXXXX ON OLD BUSES WHILE PAX STAND IN COLD.

The ideal location would have been the former Hudson Pier depot. Plenty of space and the area is becoming another tourist area. Too bad the MTA sold off the property five years ago.

I would have thought that scrapyards recoup some of what they lay out to purchase old buses in sale of spares, reconditioned units and such. I doubt there would be much demand for those removed from 'heritage' buses. I further doubt the old buses would, therefore, be of as much value to them as something such as an RTS (for example); with vehicles of the same generation as RTSes being still in widespread use, there will still be a healthy demand for salvageable spares.

Much of that cost is also recovered through parts sales. If you already own a historic bus, where do you go for parts? Either a scrapyard or another still-extant bus.

Because RIPTA seemed to strongly imply that he has an idea of how much Nimco would be willing to pay. Furthermore, I know many people here are in the business of purchasing buses (for both business and/or pleasure) and thus, especially when purchasing for pleasure, probably have a pretty good idea how much money they had to pay to keep the bus from going to a scrapper. That is, unless in every one of those transactions, scrappers were not permitted to or not offered the opportunity to name a price.

But since NYCT still runs Orions and RTSs, wouldn't they remove every conceivable working part before disposing of the bus, thus making the bus's spare parts value zilch for the scrap yard? However, if NYCT was scrapping the vintage fleet, they wouldn't care to salvage any parts, since the whole fleet was going, and thus the "rare spare parts" value of the bus for the scrapper would be HUGE.

I disagree. Having the buses assigned to active depots ensures they are both protected and maintained. At an off-site location, protection would be far worse, and maintenance would be far costlier and thus virtually unseen. Even if they allowed volunteers to maintain the buses, the maintenance resources of some hanger would be far poorer than that of NYCT's active duty depots.

It's not like they have to stay there year round, like some months they can be sent back to their respective depots.
Why can't buses have their own museum while the subway cars can?
Why can't the public see the museum buses [preferably all the buses] like a few months in the year than just 1 day and the few weeks the museum buses are running in Manhattan-Queens?

AFAIAC those buses belong in a museum that is open to the public. Bringing them out once or twice a year just doesn't cut it. The MTA should sell or donate them to transportation museums around the country that actually open their collections to the public.

No way. I disagree one million percent.

The buses do belong to a museum - the New York Transit Museum, which is wholly a part of the MTA, which controls NYCT. These buses served in NYC and there's no better museum for them.

1. The NYTM, being part of MTA and NYCT, can have its equipment maintained by the same pros who keep the active duty fleet it tip top shape day in and day out. There's no better maintenance to be had than that.

2. The buses are brought out for static display for the public at BusFest. They are also displayed at the Roadeo, but I don't think that was technically open to the public, and it's gone this year and who knows about the future. And some of the buses were displayed staticly daily throughout the month of December. So yes, I agree that there should maybe be a few more static display oppurtunities. But I feel that the excellent maintenance resources and the "in-service" operating opportunities (see below) make up for the lack of static display. Furthering supporting that idea, my first reaction is that more people see/tour the buses per year during the above mentioned static displays than there are visitors to any single east coast bus museum. But I could certainly be wrong on that.

3. IN SERVICE OPERATION: OMFG, running these buses in service is so unbelievably cool, and it directly benefits the people who deserve it the most - NY'ers. At a museum, these buses will not run in revenue service for NYCT. And there is no better way to honor these buses than to maintain them well enough to be run in revenue service, and then actually RUNNING THEM IN REVENUE SERVICE!!!

4. You're not claiming the Arnines should be sent to some other museum. Many of them are not on display - only some are and the rest are in some yard like 207 St. Those arnines are only visible to the public at events like how the vintage buses are displayed. So why say the buses should be given away but not the arnines, and all the rest of the TM subway/rail fleet that won't fit in the museum in Court St?

Not necessarily. They could easily sit in a corner untouched, and they would be more likely to be damaged by moving buses, vandals, or the elements.

It doesn't have to be long. 3-6months would be just fine. But 1 day [and a select group of buses] and the 1 month is not enough.

And remember there is more metal in those old buses. Not plastic like these lighter weight buses. So they are worth more for scrap than keeping to show off at rodeos. If push comes to shove I guess the MTA might scrap. I would hope not though.
