They currently have numbers in the 60s but I don't know how many there are. I am still learning things.Rode the 30 today, I should have biked from Pyramid Mall instead. The latter would have been faster. |

I should have ridden the buses there while I was there, just to see the scenery. Oh well. I only ended up taking two bus rides on TCAT, and I think they were both just Blue Light service from North Campus back to West Campus.I used to hang out at Best Buy a lot. But I always drove there or got a ride. |

TCAT's Orion I's were purchased new by its predecessors.Ithaca Transit purchased two orders with regular destination signs in 1983 (3 buses) and 1989 (5 buses). Cornell University Transit purchased 11 'hammerhead' Orion I's in 1992 and 1993, numbered 57 to 67. I saw several of these buses still in CU Transit colors back in 1989. JD |

The ex-CDTA buses would be very new to TCAT (CDTA retired their O1's in batches in 1998-1999, 2000, and 2004). Cornell's O1's came from their own order and outside of model have no relation to the ones at TCAT.As for telling a difference, are TCAT's fleet numbers in the 3xx, 6xx, or 7xx series? CTDA's O1's were in those ranges with buses falling into them as follows. 6xx: Many with no lift and soft seats, some with lifts and blue seats, original front end. 7xx: No lift, soft seats 3xx: Lift, blue seats, hammerhead end |

Please try to answer these two questions:1. Where did TCAT get its O1's and were they brand new or used? 2. Where did CU Transit (now merged with TCAT) get its O1's and were they brand new or used? Thanks. |

TCAT was created in 1996 by coordinating three transit operators - Ithaca Transit, CU Transit and Tompkins County Transit - and the agencies were officially merged in 2004. All three contributed buses to the TCAT fleet. As far as I can tell, the Orion I's were purchased new by Ithaca Transit and CU Transit between 1983 and 1993. When I first visited Ithaca in 1999, I believe the 1983 O1's were already retired, but the newer ones were still in service. The 'hammerhead' O1's are just now reaching 12 years of service.I'm not aware of TCAT buying any used buses in recent years. Since the mid-1990's, they purchased Nova RTS's, Nova LFS's and most recently New Flyer D40LF's. I hope this helps clarify things. JD |
